Qualifications and Duties – Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) shall provide comprehensive, evidence-based psychiatric and primary healthcare services within the scope of practice authorized by the applicable Nurse Practice Act, credentialing, and clinical privileges .

The PMHNP shall:

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, mental health assessments, and outcome-based treatment planning for patients across the lifespan.
  • Provide diagnostic, preventive, therapeutic, and follow-up care for patients with acute and chronic psychiatric disorders while addressing coexisting medical conditions as appropriate.
  • Conduct general health screenings, physical examinations, and medical evaluations for routine, acute, and chronic conditions affecting all organ systems within the practitioner's scope of practice and clinical privileges.
  • Diagnose, prescribe, and manage treatment for psychiatric and common medical conditions using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, accepted protocols, and consultation with collaborating physicians when clinically indicated.
  • Prescribe medications, monitor therapeutic effectiveness, manage adverse effects, and provide medication education consistent with federal and state regulations.
  • Administer immunizations and other preventive healthcare services in accordance with current clinical guidelines and policies.
  • Promote health maintenance, disease prevention, wellness, and positive health behaviors through patient education, counseling, and individualized treatment planning.
  • Provide crisis assessment, suicide risk evaluation, safety planning, and appropriate intervention or referral for patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, case managers, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation in the electronic health record in accordance with MTF policies, regulatory standards, and professional practice requirements.
  • Technically supervise, mentor, and educate nursing and ancillary personnel while serving as a clinical resource to promote best practices and quality patient care.
  • Develop and deliver evidence-based educational programs, lectures, and in-service training for clinical staff as assigned.
  • Recognize patients requiring isolation precautions and ensure compliance with infection prevention standards, universal precautions, and applicable safety protocols during all patient encounters.
  • Participate in staff meetings, multidisciplinary case conferences, quality improvement initiatives, peer review activities, continuing education, and patient safety programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Current national board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration and authority to prescribe controlled substances, as applicable.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred if required.
  • Demonstrated competency in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy principles, and management of patients with complex mental health conditions.
  • Strong communication, leadership, teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
  • Ability to maintain clinical privileges and satisfy all credentialing, privileging, security clearance, and continuing education requirements established by the MTF and applicable regulatory agencies.
