PIPE FOREMAN WITH CREW - UNDERGROUND UTILITY
The Pipe Foreman will lead and supervise field operations related to the installation of water, sanitary, storm, or utility pipe systems. This position demands strong leadership, safety awareness, and organizational skills to manage crews effectively, ensure project productivity, and maintain compliance with local construction standards. This role requires the applicant to bring a reliable and experienced crew (3-4 members) capable of performing underground utility work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Lead, coordinate and work alongside dedicated pipe crew (to include an equipment operator, pipe layer, tailman, hillman) assigning tasks and ensuring efficient workflow.
· Oversee layout, assembly, installation, excavation, and backfill of drainage or utility pipe systems using heavy equipment.
· Sequence pipe installation in coordination with Superintendent or Project Manager to align with project scheduling and minimize disruptions.
· Ensure crew safety, regularly inspect worksite hazards, and enforce compliance with safety standards, including OSHA and local regulations.
· Monitor equipment and materials, verifying proper function and maintenance, and manage inventory or daily logs as needed.
· Maintain crew time reporting and assist in job cost control to ensure work stays within budget.
· Communicate effectively with project stakeholders—including owners, superintendents, and subcontractors—and uphold professional relations on site.
· Conduct daily reports, review production goals, and adjust work plans to meet established targets.
Qualifications:
Pipe Foreman
· Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Pipe Foreman.
· Minimum of 3 years’ experience in heavy construction or underground utility installation experience.
· Prior experience operating an excavator.
· Valid driver’s license in good standing required; CDL may be preferred depending on equipment used.
· Knowledge of laying water lines, sanitary and storm pipes, reading construction plans, and operating related equipment.
· Strong communication, leadership, time management, and problem-solving skills; ability to guide and train crew members.
· OSHA certification (10- or 30-hour) is often required; confined space training or certifications are advantageous. (training is available)
· Proficiency with computers, spreadsheets, or software for reporting and scheduling are advantageous.
· Strong safety mindset, with a focus on maintaining safe practices and quality control are advantageous.
· Bilingual in English/Spanish, strongly preferred.
· High school diploma or GED preferred; further education (such as construction or trades) is a plus.
Pipe Crew (pipe layer, equipment operator, tailman, hillman)
· Minimum of 3 years’ experience in underground utility installation.
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
· Knowledge of laying water lines, sanitary and storm pipes, reading construction plans, and operating related equipment.
· OSHA certification (10-hour) preferred (training is available).
· Understanding safety regulations and best practices.
· Bilingual in English/Spanish, strongly preferred.
· High school diploma or GED preferred.
Physical Requirements:
· Physical capacity to work outdoors, perform manual labor, climb on/off heavy equipment, and navigate uneven terrain and variable weather conditions.
· Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
· Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
