Medication Technician/CNA

The Medication Technician/CNA provides routine daily medications both prescription and nonprescription to patients whose condition and drug regimen are stable, as well as assisting the resident in performing activities of daily living and other related duties in the department.

Job Duties:

1. Administer medication using the 6 rights of medication administration- Right medication, Right resident, Right dose, Right route, Right time and Right documentation.
2. Monitor for changes in the residents vital signs, behavior or any adverse reactions from medications- if any must report to the charge nurse.
3. Chart all prescription and nonprescription medications  administered in the electronic medical record (EMAR and ETAR) after you administer them.
4. Follow all facility standards and regulations to ensure the safety of all residents and staff
5. Assist the nursing staff in providing care to geriatric patients using knowledge of and techniques for dealing with problems associated with aging.
6. Assist residents with personal grooming and dressing, use of toilet and/or bedpan and with their dining experience and social activities.
7. Transport residents to and from meals, activities and other areas as needed. This includes wheelchair transport (may have to push residents up to 200 lbs.)
8. Responds promptly to resident call bells or requests from residents and any emergencies.
9. Provide non-skilled treatments such as measurement of vital signs, turning and positioning, transfers, recording of bowel and bladder function, care for the incontinent, including skin care, range of motion exercises, assistance with walking, testing of urine, recording of in-take and out-put, application and release of protective restraints, weighing and measuring, administration of non-medicated enemas and vaginal irrigations, collections of voided urine specimens and stool specimens, and post-mortem care of the body.
10. Communicat reports of residents’ conditions, especially any unusual incidents or changes.
11. Assess clothing for cleaning needs, labeling and appropriate storage, and with maintaining the residents environment/rooms.
12. Record supply usage.
13. Assist with maintaining residents’ environment
14. Other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on an as-needed basis by an authorized supervisor.

Typical Physical Demands 

1. Employee must have the ability and knowledge to lift and move residents safely.
2. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. of weight; to reach and extend hands and arms in any direction; to seize, hold, grip, turn or otherwise work with hands.
3. Be able to bend, stoop, kneel, bend at the waist.
4. Be able to clearly hear sounds as is needed in monitoring blood pressures.
5. Be able to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
6. Have an acute sense of smell.
7. Must be able to push residents that weigh 200 lbs. in a wheelchair. 
8. Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
9. Must be able to successfully complete the WorkSTEPS Functional Testing program.  This program assists in determining whether applicants/employees are able to safely perform essential job functions.

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED required

Minimum Experience  

At least one year of experience as a medication aide/ CNA in long term care

License and/or Certification Required

• Certified as a Medication Technician in the State of North Caroline and registered with the NC Department of Health and Human Services.

• Certified as a Nurse Aide I and registered with the North Carolina Department of Facility Services Nurse Aide Registry.

• BLS Certification through the American Heart Association

Salary : $19 - $22
