SUMMARY:

Inspect food establishments, collect monies, and issue receipts; investigate complaints of public health nuisances; prepare reports of findings to include recommendations for corrective actions.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

1. Director of Environmental Health.

2. Non-supervisory position.

3. Regular contact with county employees, local businesses and organizations, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

· Keep accurate records and money handling;

· Writing and filing citations and testifying as a state witness as necessary;

· Prepare and maintain reports and documents as required;

· Maintain and update computerized files, including inspection reports, correspondence, and permits;

· Respond to emergencies relating to potential environmental hazards, including oil spills and gas leaks;

· Maintain accreditation of Food Handler program and conduct classes for food service workers;

· Enforce state and local codes for health and sanitation;

· Coordinate and perform regulatory health inspections of food establishments, festival booths, and tourist & trailer camps;

· Review for compliance with state regulations and approve plans for commercial kitchens prior to construction or remodeling;

· Investigate citizen complaints regarding health violations and those discovered while on patrol when performing field inspections;

· Accessible to the public to answer questions and provide customer service as needed;

· Consult with the Texas Department of State Health Services on Public Health issues;

· Work with the County Attorney’s office and the City of Rockport to update Food Establishment Orders as needed.

· Maintain Food Handler program certification with Texas Department of State Health Services;

· Attend continuing education classes and seminars as required to maintain necessary certifications;

· And other duties as needed or requested.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

· Legal statutes addressing litter and sewer/septic control;

· departmental policies and procedures of county governments

Skills/Abilities:

· Establish effective working relationships with co-workers, local law enforcement, the general public, civic groups, and local and state officials;

· Operate a computer, including standard word processing, spreadsheet, and data inquiry software;

· Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication;

· Interpret and communicate to others building codes, statutes, and other related codes;

· Maintain accurate and complete records;

· Read and understand blueprints, maps, and plats;

· Safely operate personal or county owned vehicles in the performance of duties;

· Display dependable work habits and accept a flexible work schedule as job requires;

· Create and maintain an organized system of filing;

· Maintain appropriate necessary certifications

Acceptable Experience and Training:

· Requirements include graduation from an accredited four year college or university with at least 30 semester hours in basic or natural science or any combination thereof

CERTIFICATES & LICENSES REQUIRED:

· Current Texas Driver’s License.

· Obtain Designated Representative License within 1 year of employment start date

· Regularly required to sit, bend, kneel, walk, stand, reach, and move objects weighing up to 20 lbs.

· The noise level in the work environment is usually high.

· The employee will be required to perform multiple tasks correctly and efficiently, and work within deadlines.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.75 - $23.90 per hour
