Laboratory Technician - Instrumentation

Aquatech immediately needs a full-time Laboratory and Treatability Technician Instrumentation to work in our Canonsburg, PA office. The Laboratory and Treatability Technician Instrumentation will perform the duties described in the job description below and will be considered an on-exempt employee.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in an industrial laboratory specializing in industrial wastewater characterization for in-house engineering use and customer reports. This candidate will be responsible for all laboratory work, from analyses to maintaining labware in a ready-to-use condition.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience:

• BS degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, or related field
• Minimum of  Three (3) or more years of experience

Job Description:

• Developing operating procedures and performing the tests for various water and wastewater treatment operations, such as:
  • Jar tests for determining and optimizing chemical dosing for various treatment approaches;
  • Settling Tes,s e.g,. SVI;
  • Bench and Pilot Scale evaluations for anoxic, aerobic, and anaerobic biological treatment;
  • Columns and batch testing for ion exchange resins, carbon adsorption, activated alumni, etc.
  • Filtration systems (conventional, membrane, ceramic);
  • Prepare synthetic solutions to simulate customer wastewater for preliminary characterization
  •  
• Collecting Data by measuring/recording operating conditions such as pumping rates, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO)n Reduction Potential (ORP) ttemperatureature and pressure
• Operating and light maintenance on small-scale equipment such as pumps, heaters, and mixers;
• Preparing samples for testing;
• Prepare reagents for in-house lab analyses
• Performing various laboratory tests:
  • pH;
  • Dissolved Oxygen (DO);
  • Color
  • Temperature (T);
  • Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP);
  • Volatile Organic Acids (VOA),
  • M & P Alkalinity (ALK);
  • Calcium & Magnesium Hardness

  • Oil & Grease
  • Total Suspended Solids (TSS);
  • Volatile Suspended Solids (TVSS);
  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
  • Oxygen Uptake Rate (OUR);
  • Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD₅)
  • Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD);
  • Total Organic Carbon (TOC)
  • Turbidity;
  • Phosphorus/Phosphate
  • TKN/Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate
  • Biogas Measurement;
• Pulling third-party laboratory analysis;
• Maintained reagents and lab inventory
• Maintained calibration records for lab equipment
• Maintained MSDS documentation for lab chemicals and reagents
• Managing/Communicating Data
• Maintaining cleanliness of lab equipment, including glassware used in lab analyses and operating areas.

Skill Requirements:

• Mechanical aptitude/technical background desired
• Experience/training in bench top wet inorganic chemistry analytical procedures desired
• Detail oriented
• Ability to understand and follow detailed lab procedures and safety sheets
• Experience/familiarity with standard laboratory instruments such as pH and conductivity meters, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, analytical balances, and microscopes
• Worked precisely in solution making, with measuring devices, data handling, and instrument operation
• Demonstrate initiative and willingness to learn and grow in responsibility on the job
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
• Communicate with team members and receive precise chemical data and procedures.

• Proficiency with standard laboratory instruments such as pH, TSS, use of probes for measuring process variables, use of HACH spectrophotometer, use of analytical balances, and volumetric glassware

Physical Job Demands:

 Lifting/carrying/moving 50 lbs, may need to climb ladd, and cannot be afraid of heights, and will need to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while on site. Involves sitting at a desk for extended periods. Needs a high degree of concentration in a busy area.
