Position Overview:
Approved Sheet Metal is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented custom sheet metal fabrication Programmer and Estimator with a high sense of urgency to join our team. This role is critical in generating accurate and fast quotes for custom sheet metal parts, assemblies, and components, primarily for prototyping and short-run production. This role is also critical in the process planning and programming of our manufacturing equipment to make sure parts are created accurately and efficiently. The ideal candidate has a strong background in sheet metal fabrication, a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, and a customer-focused mindset.
Responsibilities:
- Cost Estimation: Generate accurate and timely cost estimates for custom sheet metal parts, assemblies, and components, with a focus on prototyping and short-run production. This involves reviewing and interpreting customer RFQs, engineering drawings, 3D models, and specifications to calculate material usage, labor hours, and machine time for various operations including cutting, forming, welding, finishing, and assembly.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with engineering, production, and procurement teams to ensure feasibility and manufacturability of designs.
- Client Communication: Prepare and submit quotes directly to customers, and communicate with clients to clarify requirements or propose design-for-manufacturability improvements.
- Manufacturing Process Planning and Programming: Develop process plans and programs for manufacturing equipment, including lasers, punches, and press brakes, to ensure accurate and efficient part production. This also includes creating job routings, 3D models, and engineering drawings for production.
- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to initiatives aimed at enhancing estimating accuracy and quote turnaround times as well as refining the production process.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience in programming or estimating within a precision sheet metal fabrication environment.
- Fabrication Expertise: Strong understanding of fabrication processes, including laser cutting, press brake forming, welding, hardware insertion, and finishing.
- Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in reading engineering drawings and experience with programming lasers for sheet metal production (e.g., ABE or similar systems).
- Software Acumen: Familiarity with ERP systems and quoting software (e.g., Fulcrum, JobBOSS, E2, Paperless Parts, or similar platforms), and CAD experience (e.g., SolidWorks or similar).
- Analytical and Communication Skills: Excellent analytical, mathematical, and communication skills are essential.
- Work Ethic: Ability to perform effectively under pressure and meet stringent deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.
