Job Title: Electro-Optical Observations Scientist                          Reports to: Principal Scientist 
FLSA Status: Full-Time (Exempt)                                                 Department: Space Science
 
Position Objective: 

  • This position requires an expert in electro-optical (EO) observation techniques and hardware for space objects in multi-spectral data collection, photometry, and object tracking. Work will include both observations and supporting research including optical design, modeling, and simulation. Additional research efforts branching from these tasks in optical design or simulation are expected 
  • Successful candidates will conduct interdisciplinary research and development in the applications of astronomy and physics related to the development of space object characterization algorithms and the collection, reduction, calibration, and analysis of remote sensing data for man-made objects in space across the electro-magnetic (EM) spectrum 
  • Successful candidates will coordinate scientific experiments using telescopes and operate and maintain instrumentation including both optical and mechanical equipment 
  • Successful candidate will assist the space science team in data collection, processing, calibration, and analysis 
  • Successful candidates will advance the development of scientific and mathematical algorithms to characterize various astronomical and man-made space objects 
  • This position is a key component of an interdisciplinary research and development team that collects data to analyze and implement next generation scientific algorithms in the area of optics, space science, and atmospheric research 
Essential Functions: 
 
  • Coordinate the operations and maintenance of various telescopes, instrumentation, laser systems, and cameras 
  • Assist in or perform optical design, modeling, and simulation for custom and commercial systems including baseline fundamentals and practical deployment characteristics 
  • Design and support verification experiments using first principles modeling 
  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of algorithms for the collection, reduction, calibration, and analysis of EO data from ground-based and space-based sensors 
  • Perform modeling and prediction of telescopes, cameras, and other optical systems using commercial software including Zemax and SolidWorks 
  • Develop and assess models, algorithms, and techniques to exploit spatially non-resolved EO data for object characterization and discrimination 
  • Develop or use algorithms and techniques for characterizing space objects using spatially resolved EO data, including mathematical modeling and simulations 
  • Conduct studies and analyses for Space Control on phenomenology across the EM spectrum 
  • Conduct data collection, processing, calibrations, analysis, and exploitation 
  • Conduct experiment planning and data collection 
  • Maintain effective customer relationships for project success and business development 
  • Prepare technical proposals or reports as required 
  • Ensure accuracy and follow documentation procedures for all work; maintain notebook of daily activities and provide weekly report of work 
  • Other duties as assigned 
Required Qualifications: 
 
  • Bachelor’s degree related to the field of astronomy, physics, electro-optics, or equivalent with a superior academic record (Master’s or PhD preferred) 
  • Aptitude for software programming and algorithm implementation 
  • Interest or experience in optical design, modeling, and simulation 
  • Ability to travel to customer sites for technical support 
  • Ability to perform and day and nighttime observations throughout all four seasons as required 
  • Attention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills 
  • Effective organizing, planning, debugging, and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements 
  • Ability to execute instructions and communication in written, oral, and diagram form 
  • Demonstrated strong writing, fact-gathering, and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in computer and software skills including but not necessarily limited to Microsoft Office products (e.g., Outlook, Word, and Power Point) 
Preferred Qualifications
 
  • Masters or PhD related to the field of astronomy, physics, electro-optics, or equivalent, with a superior academic record 
  • College cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.5 or higher
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of software applications such as Zemax, SolidWorks, TheSkyX, or Source Extractor 
  • Aptitude for experiment design and the collection of observational data on celestial objects using telescopes
  • Knowledge of Newtonian dynamics and principles for the orbits of celestial objects
  • Theoretical knowledge or experience in astronomical data collection, reduction, and analysis
  • Experience in the modeling, documenting, and prototyping new algorithms with limited guidance
  • Experience in astronomy, telescopes, and imaging or controls systems
Citizenship/Security Clearance Requirements:
 
  •  U.S. Citizen
  • Required to obtain and maintain U.S. Government Security Clearance
Office Requirements
 
  • In-office attendance is required; remote work is not offered at this time
