Position Summary

The Level 3 Machinist is an experienced manufacturing professional responsible for setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC and/or manual machining equipment to produce precision components that meet quality, safety, and production requirements. This position requires advanced machining knowledge, the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, and the capability to independently perform setups, make program adjustments, inspect finished parts, and mentor less experienced machinists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, grinders, and other machine tools with minimal supervision.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T specifications, work instructions, and process sheets.
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, work-holding devices, speeds, and feeds for efficient machining operations.
  • Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and CMM equipment.
  • Make machine offsets and program adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and process capability.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and equipment issues to minimize downtime and scrap.
  • Monitor product quality and ensure compliance with customer, engineering, and company specifications.
  • Conduct routine machine maintenance and communicate equipment concerns to maintenance personnel.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, cost reduction, and productivity.
  • Maintain accurate production, inspection, and quality records.
  • Train and mentor Level 1 and Level 2 machinists on machining techniques, setups, safety procedures, and best practices.
  • Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and housekeeping standards.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training, apprenticeship, or trade school certification in machining preferred.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with CNC machine setup and operation.
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, materials, and cutting techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and GD&T.
  • Experience using precision measuring and inspection equipment.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations involving decimals, fractions, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and solve complex machining problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Okuma, Siemens, or similar CNC controls.
  • CNC programming or program editing experience.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • CMM operation and inspection experience.
  • Certification from NIMS or equivalent machining credentials.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent lifting of materials and tooling up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, lubricants, metal chips, and varying temperatures.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
