Division: Grounds and Maintenance Department.
Reports to: General Manager.
Objectives of Position:
Responsible for overseeing the operation and administration of the Grounds & Maintenance department to ensure all structures, furnishings, equipment and grounds are optimally functional and aesthetically pleasing. The role is responsible to direct, coordinate, and perform routine, preventative and emergency interior/exterior maintenance and repairs to obtain optimum efficiency for the hotel property. Orchestrating seamless operations, ensuring impeccable service delivery, and fostering a culture of excellence are integral within the department. Accountable to maintain priorities and timelines for projects, coordinate and perform various physical operations of the hotel, including guest rooms, buildings, kitchen equipment, heating and ventilation/air conditioning, pool maintenance and various other areas of the hotel property as well as assist in the planning of major grounds projects.
The Chief Engineer must demonstrate active management, strong leadership, good communication (verbal and written), and organizational, analytical, and team building skills with team, peers and across all departments. Review and respond to all written forms of communication i.e., emails, texts. In this position, you will serve on the Hotel’s Executive Committee, as a member of the leadership team for the company.
Job Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates strong fiscal awareness.
- Responsible for inventory, par levels and assuring high standards, consistency of all equipment and ensuring adequate supplies are available to meet operational needs.
- Recruits, trains and develops team members to fulfil highest standards of work.
- Maximizes Grounds & Maintenance team’s potential with a balanced focus on operations, guests, team members and ownership satisfaction, fostering strong relations across all departments.
- Supervises maintenance operations for the property to include but not limited to refrigeration, heating, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical equipment, emergency systems, electrical systems, commercial kitchen, water features, painting and finish work, dry wall, etc.
- Develops, implements and maintains, tracking of results of an ongoing comprehensive preventative maintenance system for all buildings, equipment, grounds and utility systems.
- Maintains effective means of receipt and dispatch of maintenance and service calls reported throughout the property. Establish and maintain logs, records, etc. necessary to maintain positive control flow and progress of the work. Coordinate all record and reporting systems in a manner to interface with appropriate electronic data systems. Ensure 24/7 coverage including on-call status.
- Develops and implements an effective energy conservation program to meet consumption reduction goals established by federal, state and local agencies. Monitors energy and water management programs to ensure cost effective use of utilities.
- Develops, upholds and oversees safety, health and sanitation policies and procedures at the property concerning maintenance and grounds. Ensure the hotel complies with all government, health, fire and life safety programs including Cal-OSHA, HazCom and PPE regulations.
- Responsible for the completion and submission of monthly property Safety Inspections.
- Creates and maintains property map denoting location of all shut-off valves for water, electricity and gas.
- Responsible for the creation and ongoing tracking of daily documented inspections of facilities, equipment and systems.
- Maintains, monitors and tests hotel’s emergency features including but not limited to Fire Alarm, Ansel systems, on annual/semiannual basis.
- Establishes relationships with preferred vendors. Obtain competitive bids for all supplies and work orders and preventative maintenance programs on an annual basis or as needed. Review ongoing service contracts ensuring superior performance and competitive pricing.
- Ongoing development and training of the Grounds & Maintenance team to Appellation’s service expectations, policies and procedures.
- Complete projects as determined by the General Manager and Appellation corporate office.
- Works closely with Director of Rooms/ Director of Restaurants & Bars, to ensure that the hotel has a complete Emergency Preparedness Plan that is current, and that training of key staff and drills are conducted with regularity.
Managerial Requirements:
- Prior resort/hotel opening experience preferred.
- Mastery of one or more building trades required.
