The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

Science & Stewardship Mission

The mission of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) Natural Resource & Land Stewardship Program is to steward the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (ANST) corridor lands (fee lands, easement lands and USFS transfer lands), which protect the Appalachian Trail corridor natural resources and the Trail experience. This is accomplished through effective implementation of the Cooperative Management System involving ATC, Trail-maintaining Clubs, National Park Service Appalachian National Scenic Trail office (APPA), also Pisgah, Cherokee, and Chattahoochee-Oconnee National Forests and other public-agency partners.

Position Summary

Under the primary supervision of the Associate Director of Science and Stewardship, this position is responsible for natural resources management along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in TN, NC, and GA. Primary responsibilities include non-native invasive species (NNIS) management, open areas management, and forest health initiatives. Open areas along the Southern Region of the A.T. consist of maintaining 43 balds and forest openings that provide iconic views, wildlife habitat, and give hikers a break from “the green tunnel”. Secondary responsibilities include wildlife habitat management, monitoring plant and animal populations, other resource management activities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Non-native Native Invasive Species (NNIS) Management
  • Collaborates with ATC staff, partners, Trail Clubs, and volunteers to manage NNIS on public lands using chemical and mechanical methods.
  • Inventory sections of Southern A.T. for occurrences of NNIS.
  • Lead, plan, and coordinate volunteer NNIS management workdays with trail clubs, volunteers, and partners.
  • Assist with other data collection, mapping, database management, and equipment maintenance.
Open Areas Management
  • Coordinate management of open areas with partners, Trail Clubs, and volunteers; including assisting with management prescriptions and supervising management activities.
  • Perform stewardship activities including chainsaw operation, brushcutting, and herbicide application.
  • Mapping of treatment areas, access roads, and other features using GPS/GIS.
Forest Health
  • Retreat ash trees against the emerald ash borer in TN, NC, and GA.
  • Assist with spruce-fir restoration activities including on the ground management and data collection.
  • Other potential project work includes hemlock treatments, beech bark disease surveying, and other forest health initiatives.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree. Degree in conservation biology, ecology, forestry, or natural resources management.
  • Minimum 2-years experience performing natural resources management and stewardship activities.
  • Working knowledge of Southern Appalachian natural history and familiarity with the A.T.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and GIS.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule; position requires regular travel throughout the Southern Region (TN, NC, GA) and some weekend work and camping.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with the safe and efficient operation of a variety of land stewardship hand and power tools including but not limited to: loppers, hand saws, powered brush cutters, chainsaws, and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Creativity and attention to detail while handling multiple tasks.
  • Ability to solve problems and handle issues of a complicated/complex nature.
  • Skilled in project management and implementation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to maintain favorable relations, and inspire cooperation with volunteers.
  • Familiarity and experience with ArcGIS software and GIS principles.
  • Familiarity and experience using GPS technology.
  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR training preferred.
  • Pesticide applicator license in GA, TN, or NC preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Work may include the use of power tools not exceeding 120 decibels. (PPE provided)
  • Regular use of a computer is required; Microsoft Office, ESRI GIS, and Google applications are used.
  • Willingness to use personal vehicle for regional travel, mileage is reimbursed at federal rate.
  • Requires valid state driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions and seasonal exposure to extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, intense heat, and sunlight.
  • Incumbent must be able to handle heavy brush, walk for extended periods, stand for long periods, perform routine moderate lifting, and to carry up to 50 pounds in a backpack over a minimum of three miles, traverse rough uneven terrain, and wet and slippery surfaces.
