What are the responsibilities and job description for the County Librarian position at Appalachian Regional Library?
The County Librarian provides professional guidance to a staff of twenty-one and is directly responsible for all public services, budget management, and internal operations (including facilities maintenance) necessary to the efficient management of a county library. This employee is the library’s ambassador and is responsible for promoting the library and its services in the community. The County Librarian also participates in planning and budgeting with the Director, works with the other County Librarians in regional activities, plans and facilitates the meetings of the local library board, and maintains a good working relationship with the local library board, local Friends groups, and local funding agencies. The County Librarian directly supervises five employees and reports to the Appalachian Regional Library Director of Libraries.
A master’s degree in library science from an ALA or regionally accredited institution is required with a minimum of three years of public library administrative/management experience and eligibility for certification by the North Carolina Public Library Certification Board. Excellent oral and written communication skills and management skills are necessary. Experience with managing a budget is required. Must have the ability to plan and direct the work of staff engaged in carrying out generalized and specialized library functions.
