Position Summary:
Since 1982, the Appalachian Center for Independent Living (ACIL) a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Charleston, WV, has empowered people with disabilities to live independently and fully participate in their communities. We provide advocacy, life and employment skills training, peer support, information and referrals, transition services, and accessible transportation options—all aimed at removing barriers and promoting inclusion. ACIL also leads the Community Living Services Program, which provides home modifications and adaptive equipment to support independent living. In cooperation with the Veterans Administration, a new program is being provided for Veterans with disabilities and promoting independence to remain in their homes with support.
The Resource Development Manager is responsible for planning, developing, and executing fundraising strategies to support the mission of Appalachian Center for Independent Living (ACIL), which is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities. This role includes donor relations, event planning, community outreach, and grant writing to secure financial and in-kind resources. The ideal candidate will have a passion for disability rights and a proven track record in nonprofit development.
Key Responsibilities:
Community Engagement
o Build partnerships with local businesses, civic groups, service organizations, and state government agencies to support the mission of ACIL.
o Represent the organization at community events and networking functions.
o Advocate for the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities in all interactions.
Fundraising & Grant Writing
o In cooperation with the Executive Director, identify, write, and submit proposals to foundations, corporations, and community philanthropy organizations for various program funding needs of ACIL.
o Maintain a calendar of funding opportunities and submission deadlines.
o Manage grant reporting and compliance in coordination with program staff.
Donor Relations & Stewardship
o Develop and maintain relationships with individual donors, volunteers, sponsors, and partners to support the mission of ACIL.
o Implement donor recognition and retention strategies.
o Manage donor databases and oversee gift processing, acknowledgments, and tracking.
Campaign & Event Management
o Plan and execute fundraising campaigns, including annual giving, major gifts, and planned giving to support the various program funding needs of ACIL.
o Coordinate fundraising events such as galas, special events, awareness walks, and donor appreciation events.
o Use marketing and communications strategies to promote events and campaigns.
o This role requires strong proficiency in developing compelling marketing materials and utilizing tools such as Canva and other content creation programs.
o Preferred experience in social media marketing, including content creation and analytics, to drive engagement and grow the organization’s online presence. A creative, data-informed approach to brand storytelling and donor engagement is essential, ensuring consistent messaging and visual identity across all communications.
Strategic Planning & Reporting
o Contribute to annual fundraising goals and help develop a long-term development plan.
o Prepare regular reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors on fundraising performance.
o Monitor and evaluate development activities for effectiveness and improvement.
o Track and analyze Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess donor engagement, campaign performance, and overall fundraising effectiveness.
o Meet or exceed established Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to fundraising, donor engagement, and resource development. Consistent achievement of KPIs is a critical component for job performance and continued employment.
o Frequent travel to the service area counties is required to reach community partners and consumers. Occasionally, attendance at meetings, training and events during evening and weekends hours may be necessary.
Qualifications:
• A bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, marketing, communications, business, or a related field, along with 3–5 years of experience in fundraising and event planning, grant writing, and resource development, is required.
• Candidates with an associate degree in marketing, communications, or a related business field and 5–7 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
• Applicants without a degree but with 7 or more years of proven experience in fundraising and event planning, grant writing, and resource development are encouraged to apply.
• Strong understanding of issues facing people with disabilities preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in donor management software and/or tracking and reporting.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of local funding landscape and community resources.
• Experience working in a disability services organization or related field.
• Familiarity with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act of 2014 and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
