What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cultivation Nursery Lead position at Apotho Therapeutics?
An advanced cultivation leader responsible for full ownership of the nursery and propagation program, executing the canopy schedule, maintaining healthy mother stock, and ensuring all cloning and vegetative activities support a consistent, high-quality perpetual harvest cycle.
In addition to Cultivation Technician responsibilities, this role leads nursery operations, oversees IPM implementation and documentation, manages METRC and inventory accuracy for plant creation and transfers, captures grow-room data (environmental readings, runoff, clone success rates, KPIs), and mentors Cultivation Technicians. The Nursery Lead ensures strict adherence to SOPs, GMP/GACP standards, and compliance requirements while reporting directly to the Cultivation Manager.
Responsibilities
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Implement good agricultural practices (GAPs) and follow all GMPs and Facility Rules
- Keep good records and follow good documentation practices (GDPs)
- Keep detailed records of all nursery practices implemented and data collected
- Department KPI data collection and entry
- Execute and maintain the propagation schedule
- Take full responsibility for nursery rooms, equipment, and plant inventory
- Implement Tissue Culture practices and procedures as directed by the Cultivation Manager and/or CEO
- Maintain healthy mother stock populations for scheduled clone cuts
- Ensure clone success rates meet production targets
- Instruct and mentor Cultivation Technicians in cloning, transplanting, tagging, and watering procedures
- Ensure METRC data mirrors written logs and physical plant inventory
- Maintain nursery compliance with all state regulatory requirements, including plant creation, transfers, adjustments, and audits
- Understand Veg Room SOPs and changes to policy
- Understand Flower Room SOPs and changes to policy
- Assure cultivation team members are completing Veg Room tasks as outlined in SOPs efficiently
- Assist in all plant care from maintaining mother stock to harvest, including automated and hand watering, cloning, propagation, pheno hunting, transplanting, pruning, topping, defoliating, trellising, and harvesting
- Typical daily work tasks required include pruning, transplanting/moving plants, harvesting, cloning, hand watering, cleaning, IPM tasks, inventory management, etc.
- Perform and document IPM deployments including sprays and biological control agent (BCA) releases
- Monitor environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, VPD, W/M2, etc.
- Gather EC, pH, and irrigation volume data from grow rooms
- Scout nursery and veg rooms for pests/disease and document on proper forms
- Operate and maintain cultivation systems and equipment
- Stock cultivation supplies as needed
- Clean, sanitize, and set up nursery and grow rooms
- Maintain and ensure proper storage and sanitation of all tools and equipment including shop vacs, pumps, hoses, carts, scissors, stools, totes, gloves, rags, and PPE gear
- Conduct trials to evaluate possible improvements to nursery performance with approval from supervisor
- Perform regular audits as required
- Perform any other job-related tasks assigned by management
Compliance
- Work with the compliance team to draft forms/processes to maintain departmental compliance
- Ensure Cultivation operation is fully compliant with state regulations and federal and state law
- Assure that all operations adhere to business and industry license requirements
- Maintain strict inventory records of all plant materials, chemicals, and equipment used in growing
- Document production activities by completing forms, reports, logs, and records as required
Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Ability to pass a national background check per state cannabis regulations
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 1 year cultivation or agriculture experience preferred
- Strong understanding of propagation and plant health preferred
- Adaptable/flexible and able to work in an ever-changing environment
- Ability to work independently throughout a workday with given directive
- Leadership capability and ability to mentor technicians
- Work with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Work with inventory management software systems
Physical Requirements:
- Focus on physical tasks for extended periods without losing attention to detail
- Manual dexterity sufficient for cloning and detailed plant work
- Able to stand for 8 hours
- Able to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs
- Hearing and vision within normal ranges are essential for communication and inspection tasks
Facility Environment:
- Allergen warnings – potential exposure to dust, pollen, and plant pathogens
- Exposure to cleaning solvents such as high volumes of isopropyl alcohol
- Daily use of provided PPE including masks, hair nets, beard covers, respirators, boot covers, scrubs, non-slip shoes, and Tyvek suits as necessary
- Exposure to loud noises including air compressors, packaging equipment, and alarms (ear plugs provided)
- Exposure to CO2 manufacturing procedures at OSHA-approved levels
- High-stress tolerance, adaptability, and ability to work in a fast-paced production environment
