Job Description: Aerial Crew Leader

The Aerial Crew Leader is responsible for leading field crews in the installation, maintenance, upgrade, and repair of aerial fiber optic and coaxial cable systems. This role oversees day-to-day job site activities, ensures all work is completed safely and efficiently, and verifies that construction meets company standards, customer specifications, and applicable industry regulations.

The Aerial Crew Leader directs crews performing overhead telecommunications work such as strand placement, cable lashing, pole transfers, grounding, bonding, guying, anchoring, and the installation of related hardware and equipment. This position serves as the primary on-site leader, coordinating manpower, materials, equipment, traffic control, and communication with supervisors, utilities, inspectors, and customers as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise aerial telecommunications crews performing fiber and coax construction, maintenance, and repair.
• Plan and assign daily work activities to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within quality standards.
• Oversee aerial installation tasks including strand construction, cable lashing, overlash, pole transfers, slack storage, grounding, bonding, and hardware installation.
• Read and interpret construction prints, utility maps, work orders, and design plans.
• Inspect job sites before, during, and after work to ensure readiness, quality, and compliance.
• Enforce compliance with OSHA, NESC, DOT, and company safety policies and procedures.
• Conduct daily tailboard meetings, job hazard assessments, and safety briefings with crew members.
• Monitor crew productivity, workmanship, and adherence to established construction methods.
• Coordinate the use and maintenance of bucket trucks, trailers, lashers, testers, hand tools, and other aerial construction equipment.
• Track materials, report shortages, and ensure proper handling of fiber, coax, and related hardware.
• Troubleshoot field issues and make decisions to keep work progressing safely and efficiently.
• Maintain accurate records including daily production reports, timesheets, vehicle inspections, incident reports, and as-built documentation.
• Communicate with project managers, construction supervisors, utility companies, and subcontractors regarding project status and field conditions.
• Train, mentor, and develop crew members in proper aerial construction techniques and safe work practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Previous experience in telecommunications aerial construction, with strong hands-on experience in fiber optic and coaxial systems.
• Prior leadership or foreman experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of aerial plant construction standards, pole line practices, and telecom infrastructure.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering prints and utility documentation.
• Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards, NESC requirements, and safe traffic control practices.
• Experience operating or supervising the use of aerial construction equipment, including bucket trucks and cable placement tools.
• Valid driver's license required; CDL may be preferred or required depending on employer.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions.
• Ability to lift materials, climb ladders or poles where required, and perform physically demanding work.

Work Environment

This position works primarily in outdoor field environments and may require travel between job sites. The role involves exposure to weather, traffic, heights, and active construction conditions. Overtime, weekend work, and emergency response work may be required depending on project demands.
