What are the responsibilities and job description for the Apogee Lockhart Guide position at Apogee Lockhart?
Apogee Lockhart is Hiring: Full-Time Guide for ages 8–10
Weekdays | Monday–Wednesday, 8:30 AM–4 PM | Lockhart, TX
Are you part ninja, part naturalist, part mentor? Do you have the energy to wrangle wild-hearted boys, the creativity to spark wonder, and the steadiness to guide with both love and structure? Apogee Lockhart is looking for an inspired Guide to join our learner-driven, project-based micro school community.
About the Role:
This is a part-time, in-person position supporting our dynamic educational environment. The primary focus is guiding a group of 8–10-year-old boys—but you'll also act as a floater, supporting various ages (4–13) as needed during project work, movement time, academic studies, and outdoor adventures. We're not a traditional school—and we’re not looking for a traditional teacher. Our model blends nature immersion, alternative education philosophies (think: Waldorf, Montessori, Apogee, Coyote Mentoring), character development, and hands-on project learning. You’ll need to be adaptive, playful, organized, and rooted in purpose.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and support daily activities for 8–10 year old students in literacy, math, project-based learning, and nature-based experiences.
- Co-create and guide spontaneous challenges—like fort building, scavenger hunts, storytelling games, or engineering experiments.
- Support learner independence and growth with a warm, firm, and respectful presence (we call this being a “warm demander”).
- Float between groups and assist as needed, especially during group transitions, outdoor time, and reflective/mindfulness sessions.
- Help shape and maintain a safe, curious, and respectful classroom culture rooted in our values of freedom, responsibility, and heart-led learning.
- Occasionally participate in staff meetings, family events, or community experiences.
Ideal Traits & Qualifications We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience working with children ages 8–13 in alternative, homeschool, or nature-based settings
- Understands learner-driven education and can think outside the box
- Brings calm authority and gains kids’ respect through inspiration, not control
- Enjoys reading, storytelling, games, movement, and nature-based exploration
- Has a background or interest in martial arts (like Jiu Jitsu), outdoor skills, or creative writing is a plus
- Knows how to be silly and have fun, while also holding space for boundaries and routine
- Is reliable, collaborative, and aligned with Apogee’s values of truth, strength, creativity, and community
Logistics - Schedule: Monday–Wednesday, 8:30AM–4 PM - Location: Apogee Lockhart (on 45 acres of land just outside Lockhart, TX) - Start Date: ASAP -
Compensation: Based on experience but range from $15-$22/hr
Opportunities for growth, training, and leadership for the right person.

- Have taught in or attended forest school, unschooling, coaching, or other learner-led youth program environments (boy scouts, cap counselor etc.)
