Role Summary
The IT Product Owner is accountable for ensuring that all IT deliverables supporting our insurance operations are completed professionally, accurately, and in alignment with business needs. The Product Owner is responsible for product direction, requirement clarity, functional integrity, and stakeholder alignment. This role blends insurance domain expertise with IT solution ownership, advising business partners on the most effective ways to achieve their goals and ensuring the technology solution meets those goals.
The Product Owner defines product vision, manages the product backlog, ensures alignment with business needs, and acts as the strategic bridge between business and technical teams. Insurance‐oriented Product Owner roles further highlight deep insurance process knowledge, backlog management, cross‐functional collaboration, and translating insurance workflows into technical capabilities.
This is a consulting role and requires the selected individual to work from our Midtown NYC office at least three days per week. This is not a remote position.
Key Responsibilities
Product Leadership & Vision
- Serve as the steward of internal IT products, ensuring all system enhancements and features meet business needs.
- Translate insurance business requirements into clear, actionable user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Define product goals and maintain a coherent product roadmap aligned with business objectives, consistent with industry standards for Product Owners.
Backlog & Requirements Management
- Own and prioritize the product backlog based on business value, urgency, regulatory requirements, and technical feasibility—mirroring industry expectations for Product Owners in insurance environments.
- Ensure user stories are complete, testable, and well‐defined for the development team.
- Continuously refine backlog items based on feedback and evolving requirements.
Business Partnership & Advisory
- Act as the primary advisor to business stakeholders, recommending the best system workflows, data structures, and process improvements.
- Provide subject‐matter expertise on insurance industry terminology, lines of business, policy workflows, invoicing, claims, underwriting, and brokerage operations.
- Guide business partners toward solutions that balance functionality, compliance, and long‐term maintainability.
Cross‐Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with development teams, analysts, QA, UX, and data teams to ensure shared understanding of requirements.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, backlog refinement, sprint reviews), reflecting industry best practices.
- Coordinate with external vendors and internal teams when needed to resolve system dependencies or data integrations.
Quality & Delivery Assurance
- Validate completed work to ensure it meets acceptance criteria and functional expectations.
- Support testing efforts by clarifying expected behaviors and reviewing test outcomes.
- Monitor product performance metrics and recommend improvements, an approach aligned with industry norms around data‐driven decision‐making for Product Owners.
Qualifications
Required
- A consulting role that requires on‐site presence at our Midtown New York office at least three days per week.
- Strong knowledge of insurance industry processes, including brokerage workflows, policy administration, underwriting, quoting, renewals, and claims.
- Experience with property insurance is a big plus.
- Experience working with Agile development teams and IT solution delivery.
- Ability to translate complex business needs into understandable technical requirements.
- Excellent communication skills and stakeholder management capabilities, consistent with industry standards.
Preferred
- Experience with insurance‐related technology platforms (e.g., policy admin systems, CRM tools, quoting/binding platforms).
- Prior experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or similar role within an insurance organization, mirroring typical insurance technology Product Owner expectations.
