The Energy Market Analyst supports API’s Policy, Economics, & Regulatory Affairs Division by conducting energy market and economic analysis.  The Division represents all segments of the oil and natural gas industry—upstream, midstream, and downstream—and provides analytical and policy support to API members. 


This role reports to the Director of Energy Market Analysis within the Office of Economics and Research and will contribute to the Team’s objectives of improving understanding of key energy issues, explaining short- and long-term market developments, and informing API’s advocacy efforts.


Duties/Responsibilities



  • Monitor and analyze developments across global and domestic energy markets, identifying emerging trends and policy-relevant insights.

  • Develop and maintain data analysis tools using Python or a similar programming language. 

  • Create clear and compelling charts, graphics, and visual materials consistent with established branding and formatting standards.

  • Collaborate with division staff to produce near- and long-term deliverables, including briefing materials, presentations, articles, and website content.

  • Collect and analyze data relevant to the crude oil and natural gas industry, including:

  • U.S. and international crude oil, petroleum product, and natural gas market fundamentals (e.g., supply, demand, and trade flow data).

  • Macroeconomic indicators related to energy demand and market conditions.

  • Relevant economic and financial metrics impacting the oil and natural gas value chain.

  • Developments in adjacent energy and commodity markets as needed.

  • Assist in providing rapid analytical support during market events through data visualizations and fact-checking materials for internal teams, committees, and communications staff.


Key Relationships



  • Report to the Director of Energy Market Analysis. Work closely with other members of the Policy, Economics, & Regulatory Affairs Division and other related teams.


Qualifications



  • Requires 0-3  years of relevant professional experience or graduate-level academic experience in energy markets, economics, or a related field. Two to three years of experience is preferred.

  •  Bachelor's degree in relevant area, or other related field equivalent work experience. Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or strong interest in, energy markets and economics. 

  • Experience automating data collection and data visualizations. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. 

  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, and graphical), time management, and organizational skills.

  • Familiarity with, or ability to learn, Python, R, SQL, VBA, or other data management/programming language. 

  • Experience navigating and pulling data from EIA, IEA, OPEC, USITC, JODI, Bloomberg, IMF, or other similar sources is preferred

  • Strong initiative, intellectual curiosity, research and collaboration skills, and an ability to learn new concepts quickly. 


Physical Requirements



  • Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer

  • Move about the office to access office machinery, meeting rooms, etc. on occasion

  • Operate a computer and other office machinery such as printers and copy machines

  • Transport items and equipment up to 10 lbs. on occasion

This salary range is DC based and may be adjusted accordingly based on the candidate's geographic location.   Candidates are typically hired at a point in the salary range based on prior experience, education, and market demand for the role; candidates are also compared internally to their peers.
