Outside Plant Engineer III

Location: Remote

Employment Type: Contract

Role Overview

This position involves planning and developing drawings for the construction of new, and removal or rearrangement of existing, overhead or underground lines, cables, and conduits to obtain optimum and economical utilization of communications facilities. The role operates within a Tier 1 carrier network modernization environment, supporting capacity relief, distribution upgrades, and broadband expansion across both aerial and underground infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and develop drawings for the construction, removal, or rearrangement of overhead and underground lines, cables, and conduits.
  • Design work orders for broadband technology and conduit systems, including bills of materials (BOMs), construction specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Identify and design distribution work orders for the relief and modernization of facilities.
  • Analyze designs of feeder and distribution facilities to ensure optimal capacity, redundancy, and economical utilization.
  • Conduct field surveys and route engineering for new builds, augmentations, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Produce design packages, including engineering drawings (Visio), KMZ route files, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with construction crews, splicing teams, permitting authorities, and joint-trench partners to support build execution.
  • Support right-of-way (ROW), easement, civil permit, and pole attachment or make-ready coordination as required.
  • Maintain accurate plant records in carrier GIS and inventory systems.

Required Qualifications

Experience: 5 years of Outside Plant engineering experience.

Technical Skills: Dark Fiber experience, 3GIS experience, Visio, KMZ build experience, and a working knowledge of aerial and underground OSP design standards.

Professional Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to coordinate across engineering, construction, and operations teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a Tier 1 US telecom service provider.
  • Experience supporting carrier network modernization, capacity relief, or distribution upgrade programs.
  • AutoCAD experience.
  • Familiarity with carrier OSS, inventory, and work-order management systems.
  • Working knowledge of NESC, NEC, and applicable ROW or pole attachment standards.
  • Cost estimating and BOM development experience for OSP construction projects.

Compensation & Benefits

The pay rate for this position is between $35.00 and $50.00 per hour. Contract employees are eligible for benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance. You are also eligible to enroll in our 401(k) plan.
