Apex Systems is currently hiring for a Background Check & Onboarding Specialist with one of our top clients!

Qualified candidates will have the following experience and skills:

  • Experience in background screening, investigations, onboarding, or HR/workforce operations.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and follow‑through.
  • Experience working with vendors and multiple internal stakeholders

Location: hybrid in Tampa, FL, or Dallas, TX, or Jersey City, NJ

Pay range: $35-$40 an hour

We are seeking a Background Check & Onboarding Specialist to support the build-out of a newly established onboarding function focused on standardizing and strengthening worker onboarding processes across the organization. This role will play a critical part in addressing compliance, risk, and operational gaps while improving speed and consistency across all worker types (full-time and contingent).

This is a high-impact opportunity for someone with strong investigative instincts, sound judgment, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. Initially, the role will be heavily focused on background investigations and adjudication, with longer-term exposure to process improvement and workflow optimization as the function matures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and monitor criminal and non-criminal background checks for full-time and contingent workers throughout the onboarding lifecycle
  • Manage end-to-end case coordination with background screening vendors, including status tracking, follow-ups, and issue resolution
  • Oversee pre-boarding and onboarding activities through Day 1, ensuring all required steps are completed prior to system access
  • Facilitate and track identity verification processes, including the use of third-party verification tools where applicable
  • Review background screening results and escalate exceptions in alignment with defined adjudication standards and risk thresholds
  • Maintain accurate documentation, data integrity, and audit-ready records across HR systems
  • Support audit, compliance, and risk review efforts by validating control execution and providing required documentation
  • Track onboarding progress and proactively identify process bottlenecks across candidates, vendors, and internal teams
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to improve visibility, coordination, and overall onboarding efficiency

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in background screening, investigations, onboarding, compliance, or workforce operations
  • Strong expertise in background check processes, including adjudication, discrepancy resolution, and risk identification
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze information, identify inconsistencies, and make sound decisions
  • High attention to detail with strong documentation and follow-through discipline
  • Experience working with third-party vendors and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple workflows and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Backgrounds

  • Fraud investigation, compliance, or audit
  • Immigration or investigative roles
  • KYC / AML or similar risk-based environments
