Quality Lab Tech

Job Summary:  Performs process control testing for chemical processing tanks and paint shop.  May perform other duties related to quality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs process control testing including salt spray testing and paint adhesion testing (both wet and dry adhesion).
2. Calculates etch rates on alkaline etch tanks daily and deoxidizer tanks weekly.
3. Performs solution analysis on all process tanks as needed.
4. Calculates and makes additions to tanks to maintain proper concentrations.
5. Performs coating weight test on chemical conversion (chem film) tank.
6. Disperses coupons bi-weekly to heat treat.
7. Polishes and processes 7075 IA coupons for IGA tests.
8. Mixes copper sulfate solution for passivation testing.
9. Tests salt spray solution from collection cylinders.
10. Calibrates pH meter.
11. Performs daily accuracy checks on ohaus analytical balance.
12. Performs titrtion analysis of chemical concentrations.

NON ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintains laboratory following standard practices.
2. Orders and maintains stock for chemicals and supplies.
3. Adds chemicals to tanks as needed.
4. Maintains solutions analysis logs.
5. Maintains and monitors inventory of lab chemicals.
6. Mounts, polishes, and etches metallurgical samples as required.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.

1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
2. Previous experience working in a manufacturing environment required.
3. Minimum of 6 months previous experience in at least one discipline of chemical processing.
4. Ability to apply basic math, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
5. Ability to communicate verbally in one-on-one situations with management and co-workers; listen to others without interrupting and get clarification when needed.
6. Ability to read and understand blueprints and engineering specifications.
7. Proficient knowledge of and be able to operate the software and equipment used in the department. Software includes but is not limited to Microsoft Word. Computer skills must include ability to type and manage files.
8. Ability to safely and properly use calipers and other tools and equipment.
9. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds with assistance.
10. Must be able to wear proper PPE including face shield, cut protection, and apron.
11. Ability to identify proper materials and supplies according to specifications.
12. Strong attention to detail and focus on quality and accuracy.
13. Exhibits dependability, including following instructions; responding to supervisor’s direction; and taking responsibility for own actions.
14. Ability to take initiative, including asking for and offering help when needed; performs work independently without being prompted.
15. Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; and work within deadlines.

Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as blue prints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to speak effectively in front of customers or employees.  Ability to read, write and understand the English language.  Ability to communicate verbally in one-on-one situations with customers, management and co-workers, including the ability to communicate complex design issues to non-technical recipients; and the ability to listen to others without interrupting and get clarification when needed. 

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:  Must be able to solve practical problems involving several concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.   Ability to read, analyze and interpret simple and complex instructions, work orders, and technical procedures.  Ability to read and understand blue prints and specifications.  Ability to research and resolve issues relating to projects.  Ability to perform repetitive mental functions.

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to sit and occasionally stand and walk.  The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; stoop, and kneel.  Specific vision requirements include close-up vision.
