What are the responsibilities and job description for the Microsoft 365 Architect / Lead Engineer & Administrator position at Apex Digital Solutions?
Apex Digital Solutions | Detroit, MI (Hybrid/Remote)
Full‑Time | Client‑Facing | Billable Delivery Role
Apex Digital Solutions is hiring a Microsoft 365 Architect and Lead Engineer/Administrator to join our Microsoft‑focused consulting and managed services team. This is a hands‑on, senior technical role for someone who thrives in complex Microsoft 365 environments, leads large‑scale migrations, and confidently engages with both highly technical teams and executive stakeholders.
This role is critical to continuing to scale our delivery organization and will serve as a primary delivery lead and escalation resource across Microsoft 365 migrations, assessments, security initiatives, support escalations, and advisory engagements.
Clients you will work with range from 250 to 2,500 users across multiple industries and engagement models, including fully managed, co‑managed, advisory, and project-based services.
What You’ll Do (Duties & Responsibilities):
Delivery & Technical Leadership
- Partner closely with Solution Architecture and Product teams to define technical standards, shape new service offerings, and design assessment methodologies that support consistent delivery, scalability, and measurable outcomes.
- Act as Lead Architect and Engineer on Microsoft 365 migrations, assessments, and modernization initiatives.
- Own end‑to‑end delivery for complex Microsoft 365 projects — from design and planning through execution, validation, and transition.
- Serve as a primary escalation point for Microsoft 365, identity, and collaboration issues across client environments.
- Lead technical workstreams for Microsoft 365 tenant‑to‑tenant and multi‑tenant migrations, GSuite to Microsoft 365 migrations, and Active Directory to Active Directory migrations
- Be a hands‑on billable resource, not just an advisor — configuration, scripting, troubleshooting, and implementation are core expectations.
- Be able to delegate and track tasks to other team members but retain overall ownership and drive execution.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead and facilitate technical and executive‑level conversations with CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, IT Directors, and senior administrators
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, business‑relevant language.
- Facilitate meetings and workshops involving multiple parties and organizations (internal teams, third‑party vendors, Microsoft, and client stakeholders).
- Contribute to assessments, recommendations, executive readouts, and roadmap development.
Operational Excellence
- Demonstrate strong ownership and time management across concurrent client engagements.
- Document architectures, configurations, and recommendations clearly and consistently.
- Partner with Customer Success and Sales teams on scoping, planning, and transition to delivery.
- Help evolve Apex Digital’s Microsoft 365 standards, patterns, and delivery playbooks.
Technical Skills & Experience (Required):
Microsoft 365 Migrations & Implementations
- Proven experience leading Microsoft 365 projects for organizations with 250–2,500 users.

- Deep hands‑on experience with Tenant‑to‑tenant and multi‑tenant Microsoft 365 migrations, GSuite to Microsoft 365 migrations.
- Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams migrations.
- Demonstrated use of migration tools including Quest On Demand Migration (ODM), BitTitan, and ShareGate.
- Strong PowerShell scripting experience for migration planning, execution, and validation.

- Hands‑on experience with:
- Quest On Demand for Active Directory (ODM‑AD), ADMT, or PowerSyncPro
- User and group synchronization between AD environments

- SharePoint Online and Microsoft Teams
- PowerShell scripting for administration, automation, and reporting.

- Core networking concepts (TCP/IP, OSI model, subnetting)
- Routing and switching fundamentals, including VLANs
- Network traffic flow, segmentation, and basic firewall concepts
- Ability to diagnose and resolve common network connectivity, routing, and performance issues across on‑premises and hybrid environments.
Professional Skills & Experience (Required):
- Consulting experience in client‑facing roles with multiple concurrent engagements.
- Exceptional written communication skills (technical documentation, executive summaries, recommendations).
- Strong verbal and presentation skills with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Ability to lead meetings, workshops, and escalations with confidence and clarity.
- Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and follow‑through.
- Comfortable operating in fast‑moving, high‑expectation environments.
Strongly Preferred
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., Microsoft 365 Enterprise Administrator, Security, Identity).
- Experience supporting or delivering managed Microsoft 365 services.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Copilot, governance, and adoption considerations.
- Experience contributing to internal standards, frameworks, or delivery methodologies.
- Background working in or alongside Microsoft Partner organizations.
