A cannabis shift manager is responsible for overseeing daily dispensary operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, providing exceptional customer service, managing inventory and cash handling, and leading and motivating the team during their assigned shift. This role acts as a crucial link between frontline staff and upper management. Key Responsibilities:
- Shift Supervision & Leadership: Oversee all operations during a scheduled shift, including opening and closing procedures. This involves delegating tasks, monitoring performance, and fostering a positive work environment.
- Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to all local, state, and federal cannabis laws and company policies. This often involves using state tracking systems (e.g., Metrc) and conducting compliance checks.
- Customer Service: Model and enforce high standards of customer service, address customer complaints and special needs, and ensure a welcoming and professional environment.
- Inventory Management: Assist with tracking daily and monthly inventory levels, receiving product deliveries, organizing the stock room/vault, and ensuring proper product rotation (FIFO - first-in, first-out).
- Cash Handling & Reporting: Supervise cash handling procedures, including register counts and daily financial reporting.
- Staff Training & Development: Assist in the onboarding, training, coaching, and mentoring of new and existing sales associates (budtenders). Provide performance feedback and assist with disciplinary actions if necessary.
- Product Knowledge: Maintain in-depth knowledge of various cannabis products, strains, consumption methods, and effects to educate both staff and customers.
- Store Maintenance: Ensure the store and grounds are clean, organized, and presentable, managing maintenance issues as they arise.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Typically requires 1-3 years of supervisory or management experience in a retail or hospitality environment. Previous cannabis industry experience is often preferred but not always required.
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of cannabis products and the associated laws and regulations is necessary.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and standard computer applications.
- Soft Skills: Must possess strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and time management skills. The ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment is key.
- Requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age, pass a comprehensive background check, and obtain any required state licenses or certifications. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
