We are looking at add another Veterinary Assistant to join our growing team, where their passion for animal care and hands on skills will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the pets and their owners! APAWS Veterinary Hospital is a 501c3 non-profit, full service, veterinary hospital located in Eastpointe MI. We serve the general public, rescues and animal control agencies to provide high quality veterinary medicine at an affordable price. In this role, you will support veterinary professionals by providing exceptional animal care, assisting with medical procedures, and ensuring smooth clinic operations. Your enthusiasm and dedication will help create a welcoming environment for all clients and their beloved animals.
Veterinary Assistant Duties:
- Assist veterinary staff with animal restraint, handling, and positioning during examinations and procedures to ensure safety and comfort. (Canine and Feline)
- Prepare animals for surgery following aseptic techniques and veterinary protocols.
- Administer medications and treatments under supervision. (Oral, topical and injectable)
- Support laboratory work by assisting with the collection of samples, utilizing in-house analyzers, setting up samples for the reference lab and maintaining accurate records of results.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of treatment areas, kennels, laundry and equipment to uphold high standards of disease control.
- Provide front desk support by scheduling appointments, handling multiple payment methods, managing patient records, and communicating effectively with pet owners.
- Assist with animal intake and discharge processes, including documentation of medical histories and treatment plans.
- Confidently use proper animal handling techniques and restraint methods. (Canine and Feline)
- Maintain stock in exam room and treatment areas.
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions from supervisors.
Experience:
- Experience working in a veterinary clinic or hospital setting for at least one year as a veterinary assistant.
- Knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, and basic laboratory procedures is essential.
- Hands on experience with medication administration, animal catheterization, and aseptic techniques.
- Familiarity with front desk operations including pet care scheduling and client communication.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in fast paced environments while maintaining compassion for animals and clients.
