The School Safety Officer will ensure the daily safety and security of school staff and students. The School Safety Officer will also contribute to security policy management, strategy, and education to support effective campus security implementation. This role is an integral part of the School Safety team and reports to the School Principal and Assistant Principal. Please note this is a 10-month position.
Essential Functions:
Real-Time Campus Security
- Monitor campus activities through foot patrol and video surveillance.
- Monitor local police activity via a police scanner or radio.
- Assess potential real-time threats to campus security.
- Notify school staff of potential threats that may require a lockdown or other standard response protocols.
- Provide an armed response to active shooter threats.
- Respond to medical emergencies.
- Notify local first responders when warranted by threats or medical emergencies.
- Address low-level, real-time threats, including the removal of unauthorized individuals or trespassers.
- Monitor and address driving infractions or other motor vehicle hazards on campus.
- Monitor alarm systems and respond to alarm communications as necessary.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with local law enforcement agencies.
Security Management, Strategy, and Education
- Coordinate the scheduling of officers for additional coverage or special events.
- Assist school staff in the development and implementation of security policies.
- Provide Standard Response Protocol (SRP) training to staff and students.
- Participate in routine fire drills with school staff.
- Collaborate with school staff and the Facilities team to improve the physical security of facilities.
Employment Experience and Requirements
The School Safety Officer must meet the following requirements:
- Experience
- Current or former law enforcement experience with a minimum of five (5) years of active service.
- Current law enforcement officers must be in good standing with their agency. Former officers must have retired or separated in good standing.
- Must be current on all required discharge or separation certifications from the agency.
- Retired or former law enforcement officers must maintain current LEOSA (Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act) certification, renewed annually during employment.
Certifications
- CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid certification.
- Maryland Wear and Carry Permit under Title 5, Subtitle 3 of the Public Safety Article, including: written employer approval, advance notice to the Secretary of State Police, and confirmation of the permit prior to carrying a handgun while on duty, as required by Md. Code, Bus. Occ. & Prof. § 19-413.
- Maryland State Police Security Guard Certification under Title 19 of the Business Occupations & Professions Article, including:
- Submission of a sworn application through the School (as employer), two complete sets of legible fingerprints, and applicable State and FBI background check fees
- A sworn declaration that the applicant has not been convicted of disqualifying crimes and has no findings of excessive force or false statements
- Completion of at least 12 hours of approved initial training (unless exempt under § 19-402(c)(2))
- Renewal every three (3) years, including 8 hours of approved continuing training
- Carrying the certification card while on duty and displaying proper identification when required
- Reporting requirements, including use-of-force incidents, arrests, or certification status changes
Position Qualifications:
- Must be in good physical and mental health to perform required security duties.
- Possess the following technical skills:
- Ability to operate video surveillance systems.
- Ability to operate digital key fob systems, if applicable.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (G Suite).
- Ability to learn required systems as needed.
- Must have a broad-based knowledge of youth-related and current social issues, including social media.
- Must have training and/or experience in de-escalation and campus law enforcement.
- Must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must demonstrate the ability to interact tactfully and effectively with staff, students, and parents.
- Must be capable of presenting and teaching in classroom and auditorium settings.
- Must be able to develop and enhance campus security policies and procedures.
- Must provide excellent references from previous employers.
- Must promote a positive and professional image of the position when interacting with staff, students, parishioners, the public, and local law enforcement agencies.
Pay Rate: $55,000, Annualized
