Director of Music and Liturgy (EX)

St. Michael Poplar Springs Parish, located in Mt. Airy, MD, seeks candidates for a Director of Music and Liturgy. The Director of Music and Liturgy, in collaboration with the pastoral staff and Liturgy Committee, is responsible for fulfilling the parish mission, particularly, in supporting the Faithful to gather as disciples of Jesus in a strong liturgical life. Calling upon their individual strengths in musical expression and leveraging the skills of others (both paid and volunteer), the Director is responsible for providing music for parish liturgical celebrations that are appropriate, prayerful and beautiful. The Director, supported by the Liturgy Committee, is responsible for ensuring the component parts of a strong liturgical life, are properly envisioned, planned, and executed.  Evening and weekend work is required, particularly to attend meetings for Liturgy and other committees as well as serve during the various liturgical services and to lead practices.

Essential Functions

• Develop a long-range vision for liturgical musical expression that is embraced by pastoral staff, volunteers and the faithful community.
• Executes the long-range vision with pastoral sensitivity, leveraging the many talents of St. Michael parishioners.
• Provides, both as a musician and as the coordinator of all musical groups, a broad expression of beautifully rendered music liturgically appropriate in the Catholic setting.
• Coordinates all aspects of the music ministry to ensure Mass celebrations include liturgically appropriate music. This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling musicians and choosing music.
• Directly support funerals and weddings scheduled at St. Michael
• In collaboration with the Liturgy Committee, plans and coordinates all liturgical celebrations (this does not include daily Mass).
• In collaboration with the Liturgy Committee, develops and submits an annual liturgical budget to the Director of Parish Operations (DPO); monitors expenditures against approved budget and reports variances to the DPO.

General Duties:

• Serves as a liturgical resource for the Liturgy Committee.  Represents the "music" component that includes lay volunteers who lead the following ministries: lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, liturgical arts, altar servers, hospitality ministers and musicians.  Communicates Liturgy Committee decisions/recommendations to all liturgical ministers.
• Serves as a Liturgical resource to the pastoral staff, keeping current with official statements and documents on music and liturgy.
• Attends and contributes to staff, Pastoral Council and Liturgy Committee meetings.
• Recruits musicians to support music needs of the various liturgies.
• Ensures that parish musical instruments are in good repair.

Position Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Music or its equivalent. Master's Degree preferred.
• Five years' experience (paid or volunteer) providing liturgical music in a Roman Catholic setting, showing progressive growth in responsibilities sufficient to be successful in this role.
• Working knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical theology and the repertoire of sacred music
• Demonstrated ability to work collaborative with others to bring out their best work, tempered with a prudent balance of enthusiasm and patience.
• Accomplished keyboardist with choral, vocal, and conducting training and experience to ensure these areas of music liturgy are well-lead, well-rehearsed and able to meet the needs of the parish music program.
• Demonstrated ability to teach new music to the assembly, develop and nurture musicianship in others and provide pastorally-sensitive guidance in music selection in situations such as funerals and weddings.
• Practicing Catholic fully able to participate in the sacramental life of the church.
• Evening and weekend work is required, particularly to attend meetings for Liturgy and other committees as well as serve during the various liturgical services and to lead practices.

Pay Range:  $62,000 - $66,000, Annualized

Salary : $62,000 - $66,000
