The Anti-Drug & Alcohol Crusaders, Inc. (ADAC) is a non-profit organization that has been in operation for 40 years delivering substance misuse and violence prevention education, recreational activities, and support services to youth and families residing in Philadelphia.

Position Overview:

The Prevention Education Specialist works directly for ADAC’s Philly Youth Making Positive Choices program. The Prevention Education Specialist is responsible for providing violence prevention, substance misuse prevention, social-emotional development education, and fun activities to youth in a school and community-based setting as well as spreading awareness on the risks of violence, substance misuse, and other risky behaviors among youth and its effects on the community. Works under the direct supervision of the Prevention Education Coordinator.

KeyResponsibilities:

  • Provide evidence-based violence and/or substance misuse prevention education to youth in grades Kindergarten through 12 in school and community-based settings, throughout the Philadelphia region.
  • Serve as a mentor to children, teens, and young adults.
  • Plan and lead fun alternative activities for youth in the partnered schools and in the community to encourage the prevention of risky behaviors.
  • Provide afterschool and summer programming to youth through partnerships with schools, local religious institutions, libraries, park & recreation centers, and/or youth serving community agencies.
  • Engage participants in lessons and activities that will foster personal growth and development of life skills.
  • Engage youth in national prevention and social norm campaigns.
  • Spread awareness on violence and substance misuse.
  • Develop & distribute informational materials such as flyers, brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, one-pagers, and graphics about violence, bullying, alcohol, marijuana and/or vaping.
  • Develop content for websites, blogs and social media about violence, bullying, alcohol, marijuana and/or vaping.
  • Escort and supervise youth on occasional field trips.
  • Identify youth and families in need of additional services and refer for case management services.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of youth and family events (e.g., youth showcases, youth-led forums, community service, family fun nights, etc.).
  • Facilitate youth, parent, and community workshops on topics related to violence and/or substance misuse prevention and awareness.
  • Assist in the planning of community events.
  • Attend and represent ADAC at community events.
  • Administer pre and post surveys, gather data for required documentation, enter survey results into specific data tools, and submit in a timely manner.
  • Administer needs assessment surveys to students
  • Assist the Lead Staff in the overall planning, implementation, and advancement of program objectives.
  • Attend various meetings with community groups/members, coalitions or other professionals who are mobilizing at the local level to make Philadelphia safer, healthier and violence- and drug-free.
  • Receive technical assistance which includes attendance at meetings in order to provide services, expertise or perspective that helps strengthen or enhance activities to promote prevention.
  • Other duties within reason may be added as deemed necessary by the Prevention Education Coordinator and other lead staff, to ensure quality services.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • An Associate’s degree in studies related to psychology, education, behavioral health, criminology, or human services, is required. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred. A High School diploma will be considered based on work experience with youth and provided a lower pay.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working in education, youth recreation, social services, juvenile justice, and/or related fields is required.
  • Experience working with a diverse population in an urban environment is preferred.
  • Good classroom management skills.
  • Great communication skills.
  • Creative and engaging presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in Google Suite and Microsoft Office.

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate will need to work occasional evenings and Saturdays.
  • Child abuse, criminal background, FBI, and sexual offender clearances will be needed.
  • Valid driver's license, car, and proof of current insurance policy for local travel to schools, community agencies, meetings, and training. If not able to use a personal vehicle, will be responsible for their own transportation needs (public transportation, taxi, Uber, or Lyft).

Pay: $21.97 - $23.62 per hour
