Requirements / Qualifications

DEFINITION: Under the general supervision of a Certificated Administrator and direction of a Speech Pathologist, to instruct pupils individually or in groups in accordance with IEP goals & objectives; to act as a paraprofessional assistant to the Speech Pathologist in performing assigned tasks and related clerical work as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Basic principles and practices of child development and pupil guidance. Methods and techniques in interacting successfully with pupil. Effectively react to emergency situation. Classroom procedures and equipment. Reading and writing communication skills. Oral and written communication skills. English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Basic mathematical concepts, simple record keeping and record management. Ability to: Provide speech services independently with pupils individually or in a group setting. Demonstrate correct oral English vocabulary, syntax/grammar to pupil(s). Articulate clearly and demonstrate the proper formation of sounds of speech. Assist with instruction and related activities of the assigned learning environment. Understand cultural and linguistic heritages. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, in English. Assist in the educational program of assigned pupil(s). Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Work independently with routine guidance and supervision. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Perform routine clerical duties and operate office machines/equipment. Learn laws, rules, practices and procedures related to public education for pupils and related to the speech/language program. Demonstrate superior organizational skills in curriculum planning, scheduling speech services and daily notations, rosters keeping. Having direct supervision over students. Effectively react to emergencies and maintain emotional control under difficult situations. Maintain confidentiality of privilege information obtained in the course of work. May act as a paraprofessional assistant to a teacher in performing assigned tasks. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Any combination of education, training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: High school diploma or GED, and one of the following: Completion of two years of higher education study (completion of 30 college semester units, which includes course work directly related to the job, such as speech communication disorders, child psychology, early child care or child development), OR possession of an Associate’s or higher level degree, OR successful completion of an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of, and the ability to, assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics or mathematics readiness.
