Department: Direct Services, Relative Home Assessment Services (RHAS)

Hours/Status: Full-Time/Exempt; occasional evening and weekend work required

Reports To: Program Manager

Work Schedule: Combination of office and community-based work; schedule may vary based on outreach needs

Salary Range: $20-$23

Job Summary

The Parent Trainer is a peer-based role responsible for supporting the delivery of pre-approval and post-approval training to relative and Non-Relative Extended Family Member (NREFM) caregivers participating in the Resource Family Approval (RFA) process through the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

This position utilizes lived experience as a Resource/Placement Parent to engage, encourage, and guide caregivers through the training process. The Parent Trainer supports group and individual training sessions, reinforces curriculum concepts, and helps caregivers understand expectations by sharing real-life insight and practical application.

The RHAS Parent Trainer works collaboratively with program staff to ensure caregivers feel prepared, supported, and confident in their role throughout the RFA process.

Key Responsibilities

Training Delivery and Facilitation

  • Support the delivery of RFA pre-approval and post-approval training sessions
  • Assist with facilitating group and one-on-one training sessions alongside program staff
  • Reinforce curriculum concepts through discussion, examples, and shared experience
  • Share lived experience to help caregivers understand real-life application of training content
  • Support a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging training environment

Caregiver Education and Support

  • Build rapport and trust with caregivers through relatable and supportive communication
  • Encourage caregiver participation and engagement throughout the training process
  • Provide peer-based guidance and encouragement to support caregiver confidence
  • Respond to caregiver questions and refer more complex concerns to program staff as appropriate

Program Support and Documentation

  • Assist with tracking attendance and participation in training sessions
  • Support completion of required program documentation as directed
  • Maintain confidentiality of all participant and program information
  • Follow program guidelines and expectations for service delivery

Outreach and Follow-Up

  • Support outreach efforts to encourage caregiver participation and retention in training
  • Conduct follow-up communication with caregivers as directed by program staff
  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of training sessions

Collaboration and Program Support

  • Work closely with RHAS staff to support coordinated service delivery
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions as required
  • Accept coaching and feedback to improve facilitation and engagement skills
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or program manager

Travel Requirements

  • Local travel within the Antelope Valley region required for home-based and community training sessions
  • Occasional travel to off-site trainings, meetings, or agency events
  • Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with AVPH policy

Required Qualifications

  • Must have successfully completed the Resource Family Approval (RFA) process
  • Must be an approved Resource/Placement Parent in good standing with DCFS or applicable agency
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience providing care as a resource or foster parent
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Ability to effectively communicate and engage with individuals and groups
  • Ability to share lived experience in a professional, supportive, and training-focused manner
  • Basic computer skills, including email, virtual meeting platforms, and data entry
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to program and agency guidelines
  • Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of current automobile insurance required
  • Annual TB test required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience facilitating or supporting trainings, workshops, or group discussions
  • Experience mentoring or supporting other caregivers or families
  • Bilingual (Spanish or other languages reflective of the community served) preferred

Additional Information

  • This position is grant-funded and contingent upon continued funding and program needs.
  • Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in accordance with agency standards.
  • Must comply with all AVPH policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Job duties may be modified to remain compliant with programmatic or grant-related changes.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Work performed in office, field, and community-based environments
  • Regular interaction with families experiencing high-risk or sensitive circumstances
  • Must maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and squat for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Local travel within the Antelope Valley region required
