The WNA/LE is responsible for enrolling, recertifying, nutrition evaluation, nutrition education, evaluating/resolving breastfeeding issues, prescribing, and issuing food benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts nutrition assessment for low-risk WIC participants
- Evaluates height, weight, and lab values from medical form.
- Evaluates nutrition screening questions in WIC WISE.
- Evaluates and prioritizes nutrition risks.
- Nutrition education
- Provides nutrition counseling on WIC WISE generated risks or participant choice.
- Includes breastfeeding encouragement and support education for all pregnant participants.
- Uses motivational interviewing techniques and involves participant in counseling.
- Counseling is focused and time spent is appropriate.
- Appropriate pamphlets and referrals are given.
- Facilitate/conduct group education classes.
- Attend Agency meetings to keep current on participant education topics which include driving to alternate clinics.
- Breastfeeding education and support
- Evaluate breastfeeding problems.
- Develop an appropriate plan of care for mom and baby.
- Assist all WIC staff with supporting moms to breastfeed.
- Assist with breastfeeding rounds in the hospital as needed.
- Teach and facilitate participant breastfeeding class/support groups.
- Be a resource person for providers, nurses, and the medical community.
- Documentation
- Enters all data, labs, height/weight, and demographic information into WIC WISE correctly.
- Enters note in the Care Plan screen for all enrollments, recertification’s, single trimester, and mid-certification checks.
- The note entered in the Care Plan screen is related to the WIC WISE generated nutrition risk and the appropriate follow up plan is indicated when necessary.
- All pregnant participants have a breastfeeding support/encouragement note in the Breastfeeding Support and Notes screen.
- Education contacts are documented on the Nutrition Education Documentation screen for each participant.
- Appropriate HOLDS/ALERTS are placed for request for blood test, immunization record, medical forms, address, and income verification.
- Ensure all appropriate documents are signed by the participant.
- WIC WISE competency
- Complete enrollments, recertification’s, mid-certifications, trimester checks, and
- Prescribe the correct food package for the participant.
- Make the correct appointment in the correct clinic for the participant.
- Enter all data into WIC WISE correctly.
- Update nutrition education boards in clinics.
- Over-see outreach activates as needed.
- Maintain breastfeeding call book.
- Maintain electric pump book.
- Manage breastfeeding incentive program.
- Rotate/cover WIC clinics depending on staffing.

Education
- High School Diploma.
- Successful completion of college course Nutrition 101 or equivalent (preferred).
- 1 year of experience working in a community nutrition program preferred.
- 1 year of experience with breastfeeding education and support preferred.
- State of California WIC Program WIC Nutrition Assistant Completion of Certification within 1 year of employment.
- Certified Lactation Educator Certificate.
- California drivers’ license and current car insurance.
