Lower School Learning Specialist, Long-term Substitute
Annie Wright is seeking a Limited Duration, Lower School Learning Specialist to begin immediately. This is a full-time, benefited, long-term substitute position that reports directly to the Lower School Division Director. This position is expected to run a minimum duration from December 2nd, 2024 through March 3rd, 2024, and perhaps longer, to be determined.

Position Description
The Lower School Learning Specialist Long-term Substitute Teacher at Annie Wright is an enthusiastic educator, passionate about supporting young students in their journey through the start of their school career. This person strives to meet the individual needs of students and encourages each student to reach their personal best and to cultivate age-appropriate self-management skills that lead to independent and community-minded thinking. The Lower School Learning Specialist Long-term Substitute Teacher is skilled in differentiation and appreciates a developmental approach to learning. This person has experience in the classroom and can provide needed intervention and support to students. Through professional and personal experience, this person has developed a deep understanding of meeting the range of needs of children and finds joy and love in it. They employ strategies to help students build resilience and growth mindsets that enable them to meet challenges with tenacity and endurance.
The work of a Lower School Learning Specialist Long-term Substitute Teacher is unique and is most successful when done as part of a team. This person will work hand in hand with our other Lower School Learning Specialist, a shared Math Specialist, and other members of the Student Support Team to ensure we are best meeting the needs of students and in partnership with their families.
Position Overview: Duties & Responsibilities
The Lower School Learning Specialist:
- provides direct support to individual students requiring accommodations, remediation, and extension by pushing into classrooms or pulling students out for individual or small group literacy support;
- coaches and supports faculty to develop strategies to implement accommodations and support students;
- maintains communication with families about students’ needs and progress and provides parent support as needed;
- works as part of the Lower School Student Action Team to identify, strategize on, and support students’ needs;
- assists in updating Individual Accommodation Plans and maintains support plan files for students with documented/demonstrated learning differences;
- assists with daily duties alongside other members of the Lower School team, including carline and an occasional recess duty as needed;
- and fulfills other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The Lower School Learning Specialist Long-term Substitute Teacher will demonstrate key elements of the listed expertise and experiences. This is an aspirational list, and Annie Wright Schools encourages candidates to apply who may not currently possess, but are working on building, all of these qualities. The Lower School Learning Specialist Long-term Substitute Teacher:
- holds a BA in Education or a related field;
- has experience working with Lower School (Preschool-Grade 5) as a classroom teacher or learning specialist;
- demonstrates familiarity with current research and best practices in learning, differentiation, and teaching; flexibility;
- is proficient in using technology as a learning support tool;
- exhibits an understanding of and enthusiasm to work with and care for Lower School students and the desire to collaborate as part of a team;
- Practices cultural humility in personal interactions;
- And, is eligible to work in the United States. Note: Under our current employment policies, we are unable to sponsor work visas and do not offer positions to candidates who are not yet eligible to work in the United States.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods;
- Must be able to move comfortably around a classroom and outdoor playground space, accessing materials and assisting students as needed;
- Must be able to navigate the stairs on campus;
- Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods;
- Must be able to communicate and exchange information with young children, other teachers, and families.
Salary & benefits
This position offers a salary of $1,846 per week (prorated based on any days missed) which equates to $46.15 per hour. Benefits available to the hired candidate for the Lower School Learning Specialist, Long-term Substitute include the following, subject to the terms of the applicable benefit plan:
