This posting will be used to fill a Full Time, Permanent, Represented, Safety Sensitive, Solid Waste Mechanic position in the Department of Public Works. 

This is advanced level skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy duty trucks, construction equipment, and related gasoline and diesel powered equipment to efficiently diagnose and make proper repairs on solid waste management system vehicles and heavy equipment. 

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK 
Work involves responsibility for the performance of highly skilled work in the maintenance and mechanical repairs of heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, and gasoline/diesel-powered equipment used at solid waste management facilities and for residential collection services. Work includes serving as lead solid waste mechanic, performing heavy maintenance and repairs on equipment such as final drive seals, engine and transmission repairs, complete undercarriage replacement and rehabilitation, and heavy-duty truck repairs. The incumbent monitors all routine maintenance by manufacturer's specifications and recommendations; assumes the role of team leader for lower-level mechanics; prepares necessary reports; and interacts with vendors for pricing and parts availability. Work requires considerable knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair practices for solid waste management system vehicles and heavy-duty equipment. Assignments are received in the form of work orders, and employees work under general supervision using independent judgment in diagnosis and repair. Work is subjected to testing upon completion. Note: A majority of these activities occur outdoors without protection from the weather. This results in exposure to all weather conditions such as cold, heat, dampness, rain, wind, and snow; a work environment that is noisy, dirty, muddy, dusty, and has disagreeable odors; the need to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust mask, gloves, goggles, face shield and ear protection while performing duties; and walking and working on uneven terrain.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimal qualifications and salary level for this class.   • Schedules and coordinates all Waste Management System (WMS) repairs for vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Schedules and coordinates all contracted equipment repairs with the immediate supervisor until completion. 
  • Performs heavy maintenance and repairs on equipment such as final drive seals, engine, and transmission repairs. 
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles; completes undercarriage replacement/rehabilitation for heavy-duty truck repairs.
  • Monitors expenditures for parts and materials; performs rebuild as determined by analysis of problem. 
  • Assumes role of Team Leader for lower-level mechanics; guides, directs, and supervises as lead worker in accomplishing tasks.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, records, and tracks monthly statements; creates computerized work orders in Cass Works; and contacts vendors on price and parts availability. 
  • Participates in the Bureau's initiative to increase recycling at each facility and countywide. 
  • Operates fuel service truck; maintains Class A CDL with HazMat and Tanker Endorsement. Performs related duties as required. 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, testing devices, and techniques used in the repair of heavy automotive equipment and vehicles, including gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic systems. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines, associated electrical and hydraulic equipment, and computerized instrumentation systems. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 
  • Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive and heavy-duty equipment repair work. 
  • Superior ability to diagnose defects in automotive and heavy-duty equipment, including the use of computerized diagnostic tools. 
  • Ability to train and supervise other workers. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
Education: Graduation from high school or vocational school supplemented by special courses in electrical, hydraulic, or instrumentation systems.
Experience: Two ( 2 ) or more years of experience in skilled work in the diagnosis and repair of complex diesel or gasoline-powered vehicles, equipment and ancillary systems. 

Additional Requirements: 
  • A valid Class A CDL with Hazardous Materials and Tanker endorsements
  • ASE certifications including T1 (Gasoline Engines), T2 (Diesel Engines), T4 (Brakes), and T8 (Preventative Maintenance Inspections) or the ability to obtain such certifications within six (6) months.

NOTE: This is a safety sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and alcohol testing. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.NOTE: Candidates will be allowed up to twelve ( 12 ) months to obtain the HazMat endorsement.

Salary : $56,222 - $90,542
