Temp: Maintenance & Facilities Apprenticeship

This position is designed for AACPS high school students who have been recruited to participate in the apprenticeship program. Job Summary

A youth apprenticeship for high school students to gain experience in the field of maintenance and facilities. Apprentices will assist a maintenance technician in performing building maintenance and repair within school facilities. Focus is plumbing and electricity.

Additional Work Days/Hours

Based on the assignment, the following additional work days and/or hours may be required as needed:

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs and replaces all types of door and window hardware, floor finishes, metal framed drywall partitions, finishing drywall, window sashes/door jambs, cabinets, stair treads, and handrails, suspended ceiling tile and T&G ceiling tile.
  • Repairs and replaces, all floor finishes Vinyl Composite Tile (VCT), carpet, quarry tile, etc. and masonry block, brick, and concrete.
  • Replaces single and thermal panes in various types of windows, doors, and showcases.
  • Cuts, fits, and joins lumber and plastic laminate in the construction and repair of cabinetry, bookcases, and countertops.
  • Performs sizing, ordering, mortising, boring, fitting, and hanging wood/metal doors and blanks.
  • Installs and repairs specialty items that include but are not limited to, chalkboards, bulletin boards, smart boards, bleachers, lockers, toilet partitions, overhead doors, folding partitioning, etc.
  • Paints the interior and exterior surfaces of buildings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics

  • Mechanically inclined.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools.
  • Knowledge of basic math and measuring.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).

Licenses and Certifications

Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.
