Job Summary
Coordinates the development of a student leadership and involvement program whereby student leadership is encouraged, and students learn to deal effectively with their educational opportunities. Assist administrators, teachers, and advisors in the building of effective student governance. Provides the Superintendent, Board of Education Members and central office administrators' access to countywide student viewpoints as needed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Maintains an official student-centered office at the central office of the Board of Education, provides opportunities for student representative groups to communicate directly to the Superintendent of Schools and other administrative staff and facilitates student discourse and exchange of ideas relating to social responsibility, leadership, advocacy, activism, the political process, civic engagement, and policy development.
- Serves as the regional advisor to Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) and develops student leadership programs that will enhance and add to a more authentic articulation of student concerns from school to school as well as county, and statewide. Prepares and administers the budget essential to the financing of the student leadership and involvement program and its immediate professional activities.
- Acts as an “on call” advisor to students, school and central office personnel, and the community in areas of student leadership, advocacy, activism, and social responsibility.
- Coordinates the activities of and serves as the advisor to the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils (CRASC) and the activities and events associated with the election of the Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) to ensure the efficacy and security of the SMOB election process. Aligns all programs and activities to the district’s initiatives of access, equity, and achievement. Coordinates the activities of and serves as the advisor to the Let’s Talk Justice planning committee.
- Provides ongoing mentorship and support for the Student Member of the Board, CRASC Officers, Teen Advisory Members, and other aspiring student leaders and social activists. Acts as a liaison from the Student Board Member to the AACPS Executive Team.
- Effectively and appropriately utilizes current student friendly technologies as a channel of communication between student leaders and the AACPS student population. Maintains the CRASC and Let’s Talk Justice webpages.
- Targets nontraditional student leaders, from underrepresented audiences, to include in all student leadership programs and structures by removing barriers to participation and creating innovative opportunities.
- Provides a menu of summer leadership activities and collaborates with community stakeholders to identify external leadership opportunities, provide, and enhance student representations, and advance the student agenda.
- Maintains membership on AACPS Committees including but not limited to Wellness Council, Bullying Prevention, Mental Health Teen Advisory, and other ad hoc committees including Code of Conduct Student Handbook. Coordinates the placement of students on appropriate countywide committees, councils, and task forces.
- Collaborates with school-based leadership coordinators to provide support for student government and increasing representation at the county level and with AACPS Communications to market leadership opportunities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required;
- Master's Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Five (5) years experience working with students/youth to develop their leadership skills in student government required; and
- Three (3) years experience in a supervisory or management role required;
- Three (3) years school-based experience preferred.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Knowledge of school organization and administration with special emphasis on management techniques as they relate to inter-personnel relationships and student involvement.
- Knowledge of current trends and research as it pertains to students' leadership in the school system and special training to decision-making, problem solving and leadership training techniques.
- Ability to speak and write effectively.
- Ability to effectively supervise the work of others.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with students, staff, and the public.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours, evenings, weekends, and emergencies as needed.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Standard Professional Certificate I (SPC I) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) preferred;
- Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) preferred;
- Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required;
- Daily access to reliable transportation.
