The incumbent serves as a Visual Information Specialist in the Executive Office of the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You must qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
- Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Researching source materials and visual elements to create a visual product. Ability to Select photos, illustrations, and/or visual materials. Determine appropriate typefaces and sizes to fit approved layouts. Meet with clients to learn information objectives for projects. Meet budgetary restraints while meeting pre-established timelines. Develop and translate available material into visual designs.

- Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have: master's or equivalent graduate degree
- or
- 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree
or
LL.B. or J.D., if related. - OR,
- Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-9.
Responsibilities:
Major duties for this position includes but is not limited to:The incumbent for this positionwill have:
- Ability to present general subject information in a visual form that conveys the intended message/effect to the desired audience.
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, and materials used in design and production in a timely manner.
- Basic knowledge of specialized subject matter, such as medicine and science.
- Ability to select photos, illustrations, or other visual materials from provided documents.
- Determine the appropriate typefaces and sizes, prepare layouts, and present materials to a group to create a visual product.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Experience as a commercial graphic designer, artist, or illustrator, determining the ability to create, design, and lay out copies and artwork.
- Knowledge of and experience in using Adobe Creative Suite. Prior experience working on Mac/Apple computers is preferred.
- Experience in customer service.
- Developing original designs, concepts, or visual styles for publications, exhibits, or presentation materials.
