SUMMARY:
The Infection Preventionist (IP) is a trained professional in hospital epidemiology principles and is
responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation and reporting of hospital acquired infections
(HAI); educating employees about infection prevention; and the support of health system policies and
procedures to ensure rigorous infection control standards that meet DNV, OSHA, DHEC, Centers for
Medicaid/Medicare Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other organized
agencies recommendations and requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES

- Investigates infection clusters, outbreaks, and exposure incidents and implements evidence-based
- Identifies infection prevention risks through surveillance data, rounding, and risk assessments;
- Participates in the annual Infection Prevention Risk Assessment and annual program evaluation;
- Conducts environmental and isolation rounds in inpatient, outpatient, procedural, emergency, and

Qualifications:
- Education: Requires a bachelor's degree in Nursing.
Technology, Epidemiology, Public Health or related healthcare field may be accepted
with applicable clinical experience.
• Specialized knowledge: Must have a working knowledge of the principles of epidemiology and
infectious disease, knowledge of Infectious Disease laws and regulations associated with
infection control, and knowledge of public health/communicable disease policies and
procedures, e.g., DHEC, DNV, OSHA, and EPA. Experience with NHSN reporting preferred.
• Skills: Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Skill in preparing and
maintain records and written reports. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working
relationships with patients, hospital and medical staff, and the public. Proficient in
communicating clearly and effectively.
• Abilities: Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to analyze
situations and apply critical thinking.
• Professional license/certification: Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology
certification is strongly preferred. All licensures and certifications must be kept up-to-date.
