Assistant Dance Team Coach
Purpose Statement
The role of Assistant Coach will assist the head coach in the organization, development, and leadership of the athletic program in support of the mission and core values of the Ankeny Community School District. Duties may include coordinating practice planning, skill development, and designing strategies which prepare the team for competition; mentoring student-athletes; assisting with camps; collaborating with other coaches; and demonstrating adherence to district, conference, and state association rules and regulations.

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt (Stipend)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid coaching license through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners or the ability to obtain it prior to the start of the season.
- Previous experience coaching, preferred.
- Strong knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, instruct, and supervise students athletes and a coaching staff.
- Ability to work under pressure and remain calm.
Essential Functions
Year-round responsibilities
- Partner with High School Dance Team Coach on objectives for the coming sport season as it would pertain to player personnel
- Keep abreast of new ideas and techniques by attending clinics and workshops, reading in his/her field.
- Be knowledgeable of rules and regulations concerning his/her sport, and changes which occur.
- Inventory, selection, care and maintenance of equipment.
- Assisting High School Dance Team Coach in day-to-day direction of the program.
Seasonal Responsibilities
Before season
- Assist High School Dance Team Coach with proper registration of all athletes at the beginning of the season.
- Assist High School Dance Team Coach in the collection of necessary fees.
- Assist High School Dance Team Coach in compiling eligibility lists and other reports.
- Be aware of and post an emergency phone and doctors list.
- Arrange for a systematic issuance of school equipment
During Season
- Assisting with responsibility for constant care of equipment and facilities being used.
- Assume supervisory control over all phases of teams in the program when the High School Dance Team Coach is not available/present.
- Coordinate with High School Dance Team Coach to organize and schedule practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athlete's greatest potential.
- Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner.
- See that facility regulations are understood and enforced.
- Emphasize safety precautions and use accepted training and injury procedures.
- Conduct oneself and teams in an ethical manner during practice and in contests.
- Instruct players on rules and rule changes, and new ideas and techniques.
- Adhere to the rules and regulations of the school district regarding school bus regulations.
- Directly supervise or designate a supervisor of all dressing rooms and lock up all facilities at the close of each practice or contest.
- Accompany the varsity team to all interscholastic activities away and be the first in attendance at home events.
End of Season
- Arrange for the systematic return of all school equipment and hold the athlete responsible for all equipment not returned.
- Arrange for cleaning, storing, and conducting an inventory of all equipment.
- Provide recommendations to High School Dance Team Coach pertaining athletic letters, certificates or special awards.
- Evaluate/Reflect on previous season to provide improvements/adjustments for next season.
- Recommend additions and/or improvements for the care and maintenance of facilities.
- Develops and maintains an effective level of communication with appropriate personnel.
- Performs other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the High School Dance Team Coach.
Other Functions
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as assigned.
- Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
- Demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality.
- Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
- Uphold and adhere to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
- Support the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.
- Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
