Description

Purpose

The Visuals Editor works collaboratively across teams at KUT/KUTX/Texas Standard and within the Texas Newsroom network to develop visual stories consistent with the stations' and public media's mission and style. A connector of people and ideas, this individual upholds and furthers KUT/KUTX's mission to cover varied communities in Central Texas and beyond. This is a mentor and passionate individual who will lead training efforts in visual storytelling across the station and coach the multimedia team to produce compelling stories.

Responsibilities

  • Develops new and innovative ways to tell visual stories consistent with KUT/KUTX's mission and style. Turns complex issues into compelling visual stories that clearly communicate key themes and concepts through photos, videos (short and long-form), galleries, and other visual content for KUT News, Texas Standard and KUTX music.
  • Plans coverage and assigns work within the Multimedia team. Conveys visual storytelling needs not only with the visuals team but also non-visual production colleagues to help solve problems.
  • Collaborates with digital teams on the best way to present visual stories on KUT and KUTX digital platforms and social media. Follows trends and developments in social media in collaboration with audience editors. Active participant in the news decision process at KUT News and Texas Standard.
  • Plans visual coverage of Studio 1A live sessions, pop-up music sessions, music festivals, and other public-facing events for KUTX and NPR Music.
  • Ensures that all content produced by the multimedia team meets KUT/KUTX standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance, as well as our stations' style. Actively incorporates varied perspectives and voices into the editorial process. Identifies omissions in our coverage and suggests ways to mitigate them.
  • Develops ongoing training program for staff and interns in photography basics, shooting video, online visual storytelling, and multimedia best practices. Coaches staff in innovative ways to tell visual stories. Works with programming, membership and development, and other departments to provide assets to showcase the station's work. Maintains our visual archive.

Required Qualifications

Seven years of experience as a photojournalist/videographer/multimedia producer, including at least five within a news organization. Experience in photographic coverage of daily and spot news, in-depth features, music and culture stories. Ability to produce content on tight deadlines. Ability to research story ideas, schedule and conduct interviews, and shoot compelling photos and videos. Experience covering live events, including multi-camera production work. Experience livestreaming. Knowledge of high-quality video capture and mastery of video-editing software. Knowledge and experience shooting multiple cameras and formats. Mastery of Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, and/or equivalent software. Experience with social media and audience engagement. Experience with multimedia training or education.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in production of multi-camera music videos. Experience with editorial decision-making within a news organization. Ability to speak Spanish.

Salary Range

$69,800 - $85,000

Employment Eligibility

Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers. Retirement Plan Eligibility

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
