Job Summary:
The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) is seeking a qualified and experienced Clerk of the Works (aka On Site Construction Representative) to monitor and document the progress and quality of the redevelopment of their facilities at 10 Chandler Street in Boston, MA.
Project Summary:
Since 1899, the Animal Rescue League of Boston has been serving Boston and its surrounding communities by providing valuable care to their animals. Their services include veterinary care, adoption, and field services.
The Project will be constructed in two phases. The first phase is comprised of an approximately 30,000 square foot three-story animal shelter and veterinary care facility which will be built from the ground up. Phase 2 follows occupancy of the Phase 1 building and will include demolition of the existing facility, construction of an attached single-story dog training space, and site work for parking and outdoor dog runs. ARL will continue to fully operate its shelter and veterinary services during Phase 1 construction.
Project Schedule:
Ground improvements/foundation: JULY – DECEMBER 2025
PHASE 1 CONSTRUCTION: JANUARY – DECEMBER 2026
PHASE 2 CONSTRUCTION: JANUARY – AUGUST 2027
Clerk employment to commence upon completion of ground improvement in mid-late October.
Project Team:
ARL has engaged QPD to manage the development of the facility. To date, the development team includes the following parties:

Key Responsibilities:
- Daily Site Monitoring: Maintain a regular presence on the job site to observe construction activities
and monitor compliance with approved plans, specifications, and quality standards.
- Schedule: Monitor work progress and note any major deviations from published schedules
- Change Orders: Assist Project Manager and Architect in analysis of Proposed Change Order costs and
negotiation thereof.
- Documentation: Keep a detailed daily log of job site conditions, contractor staffing levels, work progress, delays, deliveries, and any deviations from plans.
- Quality Monitoring: Monitor materials and workmanship for best practices, particularly as they relate to animal care spaces (e.g., noise control, climate systems, sanitation).
- Issue Reporting: Identify and report concerns, deficiencies, or non-compliance to the Project Manager and design team, with photographic and written documentation.
- Liaison Role: Act as a field liaison between ARL, contractors, architects, and engineers; attend project meetings as needed.
- Safety Compliance: Observe that all site w ork on site adheres to safety regulations and protocols.
- Inspection Coordination: Assist with and/or witness testing and inspections as required by city and state inspectors or ARL policy.
- Final Review: Participate in punch list development and closeout procedures, ensuring the site is fully operational and safe for animal occupancy.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in design or construction fields with focus on construction administration or supervision.
- Knowledge of building codes, architectural/engineering drawings, and construction methods.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or construction management software.
- Understanding of animal care facility needs, such as HVAC requirements, sanitation, soundproofing, and safety preferred.
- Ability to work independently and communicate professionally with diverse stakeholders.
- OSHA 10 (minimum); OSHA 30 preferred.
Compensation:
- $100,000 - $125,000 salary range based on relevant experience and skill levels
