Animal Lifeline of Iowa (ALI) is a special needs, no-kill animal shelter that has been supporting the Des Moines area and all of Iowa for nearly 40 years. ALI rescues cats and dogs who are injured, disabled, have medical conditions, are abused, or are vulnerable such as pregnant or nursing moms and orphaned babies requiring bottle feeding. These animals, often at risk of euthanasia in traditional shelters, are rehabilitated and placed in loving forever homes. ALI is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies entirely on private donations, grants, fundraising, and its Thrift Shop to fund its mission, receiving no government support.
This is a part-time, on-site role located in Des Moines, IA, for an Animal Care Technician. Responsibilities include providing daily care, feeding, and monitoring of animals, maintaining clean and safe living environments, and assisting with health care routines for pets, including administering medications as needed. The Animal Care Technician will also interact with shelter visitors, assist with adoptions, and ensure the overall well-being of animals through compassionate, hands-on work.
- Experience with Animal Care, Pet Care, and Animal Work, including handling and caring for animals of various needs
- Knowledge of Animal Health, including recognition of symptoms and understanding basic veterinary practices
- Laboratory Skills, such as administering medications or understanding basic hygiene protocols, are a plus
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with shelter visitors in a professional and compassionate manner
- Commitment to the mission of a no-kill animal shelter and passion for working with animals with special needs
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, hands-on environment
- Physical capability to perform tasks that may include lifting, bending, standing, and cleaning for extended periods
