What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at Animal Humane New Mexico?
Job Summary
Work in a collegial environment of support to the Chief Veterinary Officer and veterinarian in the performance of surgical preparation, anesthesia induction, monitoring, recovery, examination, and medication of donor subsidized and shelter animals. Direct the clinic staff and volunteers in the duties associated with surgical preparation, clean up, recovery and medication.
Specific Duties
1. Provide daily supervision, guidance and training to Clinic Assistants and recovery volunteers.
2. Assist with the duties for surgery preparations.
3. Maintain all equipment in surgery to insure function and safety.
4. Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the latest anesthetic and anesthesia monitoring techniques in order to perform anesthesia induction.
5. Oversee animal anesthetic recovery and follow-up care.
6. Clean and pack surgical instruments.
7. Verify animal identification information prior to surgery.
8. Perform surgery prep- clipping, tattooing, and scrubbing as needed.
9. Run autoclave as needed.
10. Evaluate animals brought in for health care issues for donor subsidized clinic appointments and shelter animals. Work under veterinary supervision in administering appropriate tests, medical care, and medication.
11. Assist with euthanasia, vaccinations, and other appropriate injections as needed.
12. Perform and maintain inventory of medical supplies.
13. Maintain accurate written and computer records for donor subsidized clients and AHA animals.
14. All other duties as may be assigned.
Job Conditions
Handle animals throughout shift that may be fractious or incoherent from anesthesia. Environment is conducive to injury from needles, scalpels, and bites.
Moderate noise environment, lots of lifting (30lb unassisted, over 30lb with assistance) and bending. Exposure to irritating and toxic chemicals. Operate small tools and equipment.

Job Requirements
· Education
High school graduate or equivalent.
AA degree from two-year college or technical school preferred.
· Experience
Competitive hourly wage based on experience
Minimum of (1) year medical, veterinary, or animal technical training from accredited school or private practice.
Licensed technician preferred.
· Skills and Abilities
Excellent written and oral communication skills (English).
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Lift up to 30 pounds unassisted regularly; lift 30 pounds on occasion with assistance.
