We are a busy, fast paced, 24 hour emergency hospital located in Bel Air, MD. We are looking to add enthusiastic, team players to our already amazing support staff of over 50 team members.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Veterinary Assistant with a strong background in exotic animal care. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of hands-on experience working with exotic species, feel confident in safely handling a wide range of animals, and be comfortable assisting with surgical monitoring. While this role has a strong focus on exotics, you will also work regularly with dogs, cats, and other small animals.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely handle and restrain exotic species (such as birds, reptiles, and small mammals) as well as traditional companion animals.
- Assist veterinarians and technicians during exams, procedures, and treatments.
- Monitor patients during and after surgery, including tracking vitals, observing recovery, and ensuring patient comfort.
- Maintain accurate medical records and document patient care.
- Perform routine tasks such as cleaning, stocking, and preparing exam rooms.
- Provide client education regarding basic animal care, husbandry, and post-procedure instructions.
- Support hospital workflow and team communication to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with exotic animals in a veterinary or similar professional setting.
- Comfortable and confident handling a variety of species, including those that may be fearful or stressed.
- Experience monitoring anesthesia or surgical patients preferred.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
- Passion for animal welfare and a commitment to high-quality care.
This position is paid, and pay ranges upon previous experience and skillset. Must be reliable, have a good work ethic, have good communication skills, be able to work well with others, have a positive attitude, and be a team player.
Must be able to work nights / days, weekends, and holidays.
