What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Engineer position at Angstrom Designs?
Angstrom Designs:
Angstrom Designs is a small instrumentation company located in downtown Santa Barbara. We develop and sell electronic test equipment and services to support photovoltaic power systems for satellites and spacecraft. Our main offerings are LED-based solar simulators, solar cell testing on the International Space Station, high-altitude solar cell calibration balloon flights, laboratory and space flight measurement systems, and custom contract work. We are also funded by government grants, including from NASA. Visit our website at www.angstromdesigns.com for more information.
Position Overview:
Angstrom Designs is looking for a full-time, on-site electrical engineer to design and test the electronics behind our measurement products. Electrical design tasks will include digital schematic design for ground test and space flight hardware, board bring-up and debug, updates to existing designs, and improvements to useability and manufacturability. The role is strongly oriented toward test and measurement: developing test setups, characterizing hardware, and building the fixtures and procedures that prove our instruments perform. Supporting work includes a smaller amount of analog instrumentation design, embedded firmware, and coordination with contract manufacturers and vendors. Non-electrical work may include application science, running and testing our tools, Python programming, program management, customer interactions and/or attending industry conferences. Angstrom Designs is a small company and as such you will be directly contributing to the success of our products and services. We’re looking for an individual who is comfortable working close to hardware and test equipment and has interest and capability to improve that hardware.
A Strong Candidate Will:
· Have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 5 years of experience
· Be able to perform schematic design for ground test and space flight hardware
· Own board bring-up, test, and debug at the bench using oscilloscopes, DMMs, and source-measure units
· Develop electrical test and measurement setups, fixtures, and procedures for characterizing hardware and products
· Contribute analog and power circuit design
· Write and debug embedded firmware for microcontroller-based instruments
· Manage electrical purchasing, assembly, and support, and work with contract manufacturers and component vendors
· Collaborate with our engineering team to develop and improve Angstrom Designs instrumentation products and services
· Learn about and implement state-of-the-art measurement techniques for solar cell testing
· Take ownership of our electrical designs from concept through production
An Ideal Candidate Has:
• Experience with Altium Designer or equivalent ECAD software
• Spacecraft electronics and/or product design experience
• Familiarity with precision measurement, data acquisition, and instrument control
• Embedded firmware experience in C/C
• Experience designing for manufacturability, testability, and reliability
• Experience in python or a similar high-level programming language
What We Offer:
• Opportunity to work on impactful projects with real-world applications
• Mentorship and guidance from experienced engineering professionals
• A collaborative and inclusive work environment
• Networking opportunities within the industry
• Competitive pay, medical and dental benefits, 401(k) with 3% match
