Multi-Axis CNC Machining Programmer & Setup SpecialistA day in the life

You start by reviewing the day’s builds: reading prints, confirming geometric tolerances, and loading programs you have proven out in G-code. You set fixtures and workholding, select the right cutters and inserts, and bring an HMC or VMC cell online—often a Makino—so the first piece meets spec. As parts run, you watch cycle health, review CMM reports, and make real-time offset tweaks. You keep a keen eye on robotic load/unload cycles, adjusting robot parameters when needed to keep flow steady and safe.

Throughout the shift, you document setups, tool changes, and any adjustments so repeatability is guaranteed. You verify part dimensions with calipers, micrometers, and both variable and attribute gauges. When equipment, robots, or process hiccups appear, you troubleshoot calmly, escalate promptly when required, and implement corrective actions. You help operators learn better setups and practices, drive 5S standards, and maintain part identification and traceability from machine to shipping. Every decision is grounded in IATF 16949 quality system expectations and MIOSHA safety requirements.

What you will do
  • Set up and operate HMC/VMC CNC machines by installing fixtures, attachments, cutting tools, and part programs to run quality parts (Makino HMC experience preferred).
  • Interpret part drawings, GD&T, and G-code programs to ensure conformance.
  • Monitor production, inspect parts with precision tools, review CMM results, and make on-the-fly adjustments.
  • Perform routine maintenance; troubleshoot machine, robot, and process issues.
  • Partner with supervisors and engineers to identify risks, maintaining production targets.
  • Record setups, tool changes, offsets, and any process changes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized area aligned to 5S and follow all safety protocols.
  • Oversee and adjust robotic load/unload cycles as needed.
  • Ensure part identification and traceability across the shop floor.
  • Escalate issues quickly and apply corrective actions for process, quality, and safety.
  • Train operators on setup and operation; drive machining process improvements.
  • Execute work in accordance with the Quality Management System (IATF 16949).
  • Follow MIOSHA standards and company policies, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrate composure under pressure, respect for others, accountability, and follow-through.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What you bring
  • 5 years setting up 3-, 4-, and 5-axis HMC CNC machines; Makino setup knowledge preferred.
  • Hands-on CNC operation and G-code programming; CAD/CAM familiarity preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, speeds, and feeds.
  • Fluent reading of blueprints; proficient with calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Expertise in machine setup, tooling, fixturing, and CNC offset adjustments.
  • Solid math and geometry skills; strong computer literacy.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy; independent and procedural work style.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving ability.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Team-oriented with clear communication skills.
  • Detail focus to investigate and analyze non-conformances; relentless pursuit of zero defects.
  • Able to read and follow Work Instructions.
  • Familiar with Makino, FANUC, Mori Seiki, and comparable CNC controls.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Flexible availability to support changing production demands.
  • Ability to manage and navigate unexpected challenges with a drive to rapidly find solutions.
