Position Title: Engine Boss

Minimum Requirements:
- Successfully complete and pass background screening, as well as drug and alcohol screening.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing.
- Must be qualified and current with NWCG Engine Boss (ENGB) qualification.
- Incident Commander Type 5 qualification (NWCG) is mandatory; Type 4 is preferred.
- Ability to lift 100 pounds.
- 3–5 years of directly related wildland firefighting experience (preferred).
- Medical, heavy equipment, and structural experience are a plus.
- Driving record must always meet Village driving & insurability standards
- Maintain Department of Transportation (DOT) Health Screens as required.
- Maintain current CEVO (Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator), Basic First Aid, and CPR certifications
- Adhere to Village of Angel Fire Personnel Policy and Department Conduct Policy at all times.
- Successful completion of a one-year probationary period is required for all public safety positions
Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Wildland Coordinator/Captain, the Engine Boss performs professional and technical duties pertaining to the operations of the Angel Fire Fire Department’s Wildland Division. The Engine Boss independently develops, coordinates, plans, and monitors all relevant techniques, best practices, and terminology relevant to wildland fire suppression and management. The Engine Boss works collaboratively with other fire personnel to accomplish fire management objectives in high complexity wildland urban interface/intermix situations. Duties include onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations of assigned crew members. This position is primarily physical and requires work on a continual basis, including fire suppression, hazardous fuel reduction, prescribed fire, and operating heavy equipment.
NWCG Engine Boss (ENGB) – Wildland Fire Operations
The Engine Boss (ENGB), as defined by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG), is responsible for leading a wildland fire engine crew during fire suppression, prescribed fire, and other all-risk incidents. This role includes supervising engine personnel, ensuring the safe and effective use of equipment, implementing tactical assignments, and maintaining communication with incident command. The Engine Boss must demonstrate strong leadership, decision-making under pressure, and a thorough understanding of wildland fire behavior, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
Education, Training and Experience – Minimum Required for Job
Education / Higher Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: 3–5 years (preferred)
Education and/or experience preferences: Field experience in wildland firefighting and operating heavy equipment
Driver's license requirement: License in Good Standing
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job
- Knowledge of wildland fire suppression principles, fire behavior, and equipment operation
- Skills to work independently and execute good judgment to schedule, maintain, and oversee the upkeep of all assigned equipment, including preventative maintenance and emergency repairs
- Ability to prioritize tasks, communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and using various web-based systems
- Ability to work irregular hours as required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to perform all job duties pertaining to wildland fire suppression, hazardous fuel reduction, prescribed fire, and crew supervision
- Communication with general public, customers, fellow employees, supervisors, and other Village departments to maintain effective working relationships
- Have excellent written communication and general understanding of Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and other Microsoft-based software.

Budgetary/Financial/Asset Accountability: Medium – Position is required to maintain assigned assets to reduce unnecessary expenditures

Essential Functions

- Lead and supervise the Fire Engine Module during wildland fire incidents, ensuring crew and equipment safety
- Evaluate fire situations, make tactical decisions, and determine appropriate suppression methods
- Conduct structure triage and protection in wildland-urban interface incidents
- Coordinate with adjoining resources and communicate with dispatch/superiors
- Develop and implement required training programs, including physical fitness and fire operations
- Maintain personnel qualifications and compliance with regulations
- Oversee fire line activities, assign missions to ground and aviation resources, and ensure safe operations
- Support AFFD Slash Program, Prescribed Fire Program, and Fire Prevention Plan
- Ensure preparedness of equipment and personnel
- Perform other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical characteristics: Must be able to lift minimum of 100 lbs., considerable amount of bending, kneeling. Daily activity level, primarily physical work on a continual basis.
Extraordinary working conditions: Extreme weather conditions; work in traffic areas; exposure to hazardous environments
Hazardous equipment/machinery used: Fire engines, pumps, hoses, hand tools, heavy machinery (as needed)
Required personal protective Equipment (PPE): Safety toe boots; hard hat; safety vest; gloves; hearing & eye protection; cold weather protection; wildland uniform
Compensation and Benefits
Pay: $27.50–$34.00 per hour (dependent on experience and qualification)
