Position: Hospice Volunteer
Status: Unpaid / Volunteer-Based
Location: Varies – Patients are served in private homes, skilled nursing facilities, or assisted living communities
Schedule: Flexible; based on volunteer availability and patient needs.
Overview:
Hospice volunteers are a vital part of the care team, offering comfort, companionship, and compassionate presence to individuals facing life-limiting illness. Whether through quiet conversation, holding a hand, reading a book, or simply being there, hospice volunteers provide emotional support and human connection during the final stages of life.
This is a meaningful opportunity for those with a heart for service, deep empathy, and a desire to comfort patients and their families when it matters most.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship and emotional support to hospice patients in their place of residence
- Engage in meaningful activities such as:
- Reading aloud
- Playing cards or board games
- Listening to music
- Sharing conversation and memories
- Simply sitting quietly with a patient to provide a comforting presence
- Offer brief respite for caregivers by staying with patients during scheduled visits
- Maintain appropriate boundaries and uphold patient confidentiality
- Complete required training and ongoing education as needed
- Accurately document volunteer visits in accordance with agency policy
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years or older
- Compassionate, dependable, and respectful of all beliefs, backgrounds, and life experiences
- Good listener and communicator with a calm, nonjudgmental demeanor
- Ability to travel to patient locations (transportation required)
- Willingness to undergo background checks, TB testing, and hospice volunteer training
Time Commitment:
- Flexible based on your availability
- Typically, 2–6 hours per week is appreciated
- We ask for at least a 6-month commitment if possible, to ensure continuity of care
