The Anesthesiologist is responsible for the delivery and medical direction of safe, high-quality anesthesia care across the perioperative continuum. This role includes independent clinical practice and/or supervision of anesthesia care team members in accordance with regulatory requirements, organizational policies, and evidence-based standards of care. The Anesthesiologist provides leadership in clinical decision-making, patient safety, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive pre-anesthetic assessments, including review of medical history, physical examinations, and diagnostic data.
  • Perform comprehensive pre-anesthetic evaluations, including review of medical history, physical examinations, diagnostic findings, and risk stratification.
  • Develop, direct, and implement individualized anesthesia plans appropriate to patient condition, procedure type, and clinical setting.
  • Personally administer anesthesia or provide medical direction/supervision of CRNAs and other anesthesia staff in compliance with CMS and state regulations.
  • Deliver general, regional, neuraxial, and monitored anesthesia care (MAC) services.
  • Manage complex airways, ventilation strategies, cardiovascular support, and hemodynamic stability.
  • Continuously monitor and interpret physiologic data throughout the intraoperative period and intervene as clinically indicated.
  • Oversee safe emergence from anesthesia and participate in post-anesthesia and pain management planning.
  • Provide leadership and rapid response in anesthesia-related emergencies and perioperative resuscitation.

Specialty-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide anesthesia services across surgical specialties, including but not limited to cardiac, pediatric, obstetric, and high-acuity cases as credentialed.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, proceduralists, and perioperative teams to optimize patient care and operating room efficiency.
  • Maintain expertise in specialty-specific techniques, equipment, and evidence-based protocols.

Quality, Safety, and Compliance

  • Practice in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as ASA standards and institutional policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer review, morbidity and mortality conferences, and risk management activities.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Uphold patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy standards.

Professional Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with CRNAs, physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Provide clinical supervision, teaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to anesthesia staff and trainees as applicable.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, clinical education, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as a clinical and professional role model within the anesthesia department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency
  • Board certified or board eligible in Anesthesiology (ABA or AOBA)
  • Active and unrestricted medical license in the state of Tennessee
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification as required for clinical duties
  • Eligibility for hospital privileges and credentialing

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and respond rapidly in emergency situations.
  • Push, pull, and maneuver beds, carts, and anesthesia equipment.
  • Bend, squat, and lift as required in the perioperative environment.
  • Manual dexterity required for airway management, vascular access, and anesthesia procedures.
  • Work performed in operating rooms, procedure suites, labor and delivery units, ICUs, and non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) locations.
