What are the responsibilities and job description for the Old Testament Exegesis and Theology position at Andrews University?

A tenure-track position that involves teaching a full load of courses at the master’s and doctoral levels. Involves advising and mentoring of students. A candidate with expertise in Old Testament Biblical Studies. The role also includes active participation in Seminary and University life, fulfilling regular faculty duties in teaching, service, research, publication, and administration, with a focus on both academic contributions, and contributions to the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Qualifications summary

Must hold a ThD in Biblical Studies preferably with a cognate in Systematic Theology, or a PhD in Old Testament, must have university teaching experience, be ordained or commissioned as a pastor. A record of academic engagement and publications is required, should have communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills, as well as a commitment to mentoring students, upholding Adventist beliefs and mission, be a team player.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities



  • Teach a full load of courses in Old Testament studies (focusing on Old Testament Exegesis and Biblical Theology) at the master and doctoral levels.

  • Advise and provide mentorship to master and doctoral students.

  • Provide advocacy and leadership in the area of Old Testament studies for the Seminary and the Seventh-day Adventist Church (and beyond).

  • Participate in Seminary and University life and responsibilities.

  • Carry regular faculty responsibilities related to teaching, service, research and publication, and administration.


Supervisory responsibilities

Preferred: Experience in dissertation advising and supervision.

Qualifications



  • An earned doctoral degree (PhD or ThD; ThD in Biblical Studies in the area of Old Testament studies with an emphasis in biblical exegesis and theology).

  • Capacity to communicate effectively and dynamically both on popular and scholarly levels.

  • Experience in teaching and pastoral ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

  • Record of academic engagement and publications are expected along with a research agenda in the area of expertise.

  • An understanding of adult learning practices and how to apply it in the context of theological education.\

  • Good interpersonal skills; the ability to collaborate well with colleagues; and a disposition conducive to interacting well with students and staff.

  • A personal history of healthy human relations, high moral integrity, and Christian spiritual maturity.

  • Commitment to mentoring students.

  • Solid support of Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and mission.

  • At least three years of teaching experience in an accredited institution of higher learning.

  • Ordained or commissioned as a pastor in the Seventh-day Adventist Church or already in a pastoral/commissioned track

  • Leadership in a project(s) for the world-wide Seventh-day Adventist Church.

  • Respected and renowned scholar in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.



Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies

Must be proficient in online and computer skills to effectively teach in all three delivery modes: in-person, synchronous hybrid, and asynchronous online.

Interpersonal interactions

Seeking an individual with strong interpersonal skills, a history of integrity and Christian spiritual maturity, and the ability to collaborate effectively while respecting diverse cultures with positive relationships to Andrews University.

Physical demands

Must be in good health and able to fulfill the duties outlined in this job posting. Must be willing to travel as required for intensive courses offered on different centers.
