The job requires a broad general knowledge of Adventist theology, and an ability to analyze or conceptualize materials for publication that enhance and advance the reputation of Adventist scholarship and of Andrews University.

Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

  • The Scholarly Publications and Andrews University Press Board

In consultation with the board chair, manages the agenda of the board by serving as the board secretary. Represents the regular operations of the Press to the board and provides all necessary reports. Secures board direction on the publication of all manuscripts and all other matters requiring board supervision.

  • Book Production

Solicits manuscripts for consideration. Oversees the time-sensitive processes of turning manuscripts into finished books, corresponding with authors and peer reviewers, writing contracts, securing contract services as needed for editorial work, text and cover design and printing.

  • Finance and Budgeting

With the assistance of a business manager, oversees the financial operations of the Press. In consultation with the chair of the Press board, develops, proposes and manages the annual budget. Oversees the work of the business manager. Reviews monthly financial statements to determine progress toward objectives, and revises objectives as necessary. Works to keep the Press on a consistent course of paying all its expenses without subsidy from the university.

  • Planning and Goal Setting

Conceptualizes, develops and executes revenue-generating projects and initiatives with new or existing products that meet the mission of the Press and strongly support the financial productivity of Press operations.

  • Marketing

Develops specific plans, products and procedures to sell Press books in increasingly wider circles of influence.

  • Facility Management

As long as the Press offices are located in Sutherland House, supervises the maintenance and appearance of that important campus landmark as an attractive and useful showpiece of institutional history.

Supervisory responsibilities


Manages an office staff of one editor, associate director/business manager, student workers and contract labor. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and solving problems.

Qualifications

  • General

The job requires a clear understanding of the purpose and procedures of a Seventh-day Adventist academic press, and a general political understanding of the academic and ecclesiological constituencies it serves. The job requires a broad general knowledge of Adventist theology, and an ability to analyze or conceptualize materials for publication that enhance and advance the reputation of Adventist scholarship and of Andrews University.

The job also requires an aggressive approach to business development that constantly seeks to identify and pursue new ventures with board support.

  • Education and Experience

Master's or doctoral level work in relevant area, with business experience and/or training, with proven ability to work effectively in an academic setting to accomplish business objectives.

  • Language Skills

Ability to read and analyze manuscripts submitted for consideration. Ability to write business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from board members, authors, employees and customers.

  • Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies


Ability to use computer programs related to the Press operations.

Interpersonal interactions


Ability to interact and communicate with key consitituets, including writers, church leaders and students.

Physical demands


Ability to travel as needed. Should be able to lift 45 pounds. Must be able to climb stairs.

Work environment


Regular office environment with steps to second floor office.
