The Crayon Box Children’s Learning Center is seeking a dependable, caring, and flexible Substitute Teacher to support classrooms as needed. Substitute Teachers assist with supervising and caring for children ages 2 weeks through 12 years while helping maintain a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment. Responsibilities may include assisting with daily routines, supporting classroom activities, supervising play, and helping classrooms stay organized and on schedule.

This position does not have a set schedule, and hours will vary based on the staffing needs of the center. Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to work with different age groups are essential.

Qualifications summary

Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates should demonstrate high energy, reliability, and the ability to work efficiently in a busy child care environment. Accuracy, strong judgment, and common sense are essential when supervising children and supporting classroom routines. Applicants must genuinely enjoy working with children and be able to create a positive, patient, and caring environment for children of various ages.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide for the basic needs and supervision of children

  • Provide materials and resources for children to explore during play and learning activities

  • Use a variety of teaching methods such as stories, games, music, and art to engage and stimulate children

  • Adapt activities and teaching methods to meet the interests and developmental levels of children

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with children and families

  • Support children in learning basic skills such as colors, letters, numbers, shapes, social skills, and personal hygiene

  • Supervise daily routines including play, transitions, bathroom breaks, meals, and rest time

  • Introduce children to new, age-appropriate activities and experiences

  • Maintain a clean and safe classroom by sanitizing toys and play areas

  • Guide children’s behavior with patience while responding to the needs of children and families

  • Serve as a flexible substitute teacher, willing to work in any classroom and with any age group as needed

  • Demonstrate patience, compassion, flexibility, and a Christ-like attitude in all interactions


Supervisory responsibilities

May supervise student workers, as determined by the Director

Qualifications

Technical competencies

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must be flexible and willing to work an inconsistent schedule based on the staffing needs of the center.

  • Must have a warm, friendly personality with sensitivity to the feelings and needs of both children and adults.

  • Must demonstrate a willingness to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the center’s philosophy and mission.

  • Position requires a high energy level and the ability to be physically active throughout the day.

  • Previous experience caring for children is preferred.

  • CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred but not required.

  • Must be willing to participate in training related to child development, safety, and center procedures.


Interpersonal interactions

Must be comfortable interacting with children of all ages, families, and fellow staff members in a positive and professional manner. This position requires frequent communication with teachers, children, and parents throughout the day while supporting classroom routines and activities. The substitute teacher must be able to build trusting relationships with children, respond to their emotional and developmental needs, and work cooperatively as part of a team. A friendly, patient, and respectful attitude is essential when working with diverse groups of children and adults.

Physical demands

Must be able to actively supervise children in both indoor and outdoor environments. Position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, sit on the floor, and move quickly when necessary to ensure children’s safety. Must be able to lift and carry children and classroom materials weighing up to 40 pounds. The job requires a high level of energy and the ability to participate in play, assist with classroom activities, and support daily routines such as transitions, meals, and rest time.

Work environment

The work environment is an active early childhood setting both indoors and outdoors. Teachers work in classrooms and regularly supervise children outside on the playground and outdoor learning areas in typical weather conditions. The environment can be busy and noisy due to normal levels of children’s play and activity. Teachers are frequently moving, assisting children with activities, and supervising group play. The position may also involve exposure to common childhood illnesses and requires regular cleaning and sanitizing of materials, toys, and surfaces.
