Pre-Op/Post-Op/Control Desk Supervisor

Main function Responsible for supervising and coordinating activities of nursing personnel in the Pre-Op, Post-Op areas according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the facility. Participates in planning work of assigned areas and coordinates activities with other Managers and DON. Ensures that patient needs are met and evaluates area nursing care and performance. Works closely with the Senior Manager in coordinating patient-care service functions. 

Duties and responsibilities

1. Philosophy

 a) Supports the facility’s ideology, mission, goals, and objectives

 b) Performs in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures 

c) Follows the facility’s standards for ethical business conduct 

d) Conducts self as a positive role model and team member 

e) Recognizes patients’ rights and responsibilities and supports them in performance of job duties 

2. General 

a) Participates in facility committees, meetings, in-services, and activities 

b) Contributes input into short and long-term goals for the facility 

c) Maintains facility and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times; reports deficiencies to Senior Manager 

d) Reports discrepancies in services provided by contracted providers (e.g., pathology, radiology, housekeeping) to Senior Manager 

e) Maintains time keeping records for staff 

f) Facilitates the flow of the day to ensure each step of the process is completed in timely manner so the patients go to surgery as scheduled 

g) Follows up on monthly chart audits to ensure charting is completed accurately 

3. Communication 

a) Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers 

b) Interacts with others in a positive, respectful, and considerate manner 

c) Promotes effective communication between all departments and physicians 

4. Financial practices 

a) Promotes cost containment and efficient use of facility resources 

b) Makes recommendations for potential cost-effective improvements 

c) Assists in monitoring FTE utilization and makes recommendations to promote cost-effective man-hour practices 

5. Compliance program 

a) Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the organization’s adopted compliance program 

b) Performs according to established compliance policies and procedures 

6. Performance-improvement program 

a) Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the organization's adopted performance-improvement program, policies, and procedures 

b) Performs according to established performance-improvement policies and procedures 

c) Serves on the performance-improvement committee 

d) Evaluates suggestions and processes to identify opportunities to improve performance and quality of care 

e) Assists in monitoring patient-care programs and reviews procedures and outcome standards and criteria 

f) Successfully contributes to the performance-improvement process 

7. Safety/risk-management program 

a) Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities 

b) Implements practices and regulations adopted to provide safety in the healthcare environment 

c) Monitors the facility's physical environment and initiates methods for maintaining safety, comfort, cleanliness, and orderliness; reports physical environment status to Safety Officer, Director of Nursing, and/or Administrator 

d) Responds to emergency situations competently

e) Ensures that OSHA requirements are met by clinical staff and that supplies are readily available 

8. Professional competence 

a) Participates in continuing education and other learning experiences 

b) Shares knowledge gained in continuing education with staff 

c) Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities 

d) Welcomes suggestions and recommendations 

e) Makes suggestions to Senior Manager for continuing education of clinical staff members 

f) Assists with orientation programs for new employees in clinical area 

9. Patient care 

a) Applies accepted clinical nursing principles and practices to patient-care activities in the facility 

b) Coordinates patient-care activities with surgeons and anesthesia providers to provide continuity of patient care 

c) Identifies and solves nursing care problems 

d) Oversee all nursing activities in his/her departments during an emergency to verify that patient needs are met 

e) Participates in primary care of patients as needed and oversees his/her clinical areas to verify that patients’ needs are met 

f) Enforces the implementation of nursing practice standards and licensing and accreditation rules/regulations to provide quality patient care 

g) Recommends any revision in patient-care policies and procedures as necessary to conform to accepted principles and practices 

h) Respects patients’ right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality 

i) Supervises care of the pre and post-op areas and the equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times 

j) Controls staff/patient traffic to help prevent infections 

10. Daily operations 

a) Coordinates and monitors operational activities for effective and efficient management of daily operation; reports deficiencies to the Senior Manager. 

b) Preparation of projected 6 week staffing schedule to ensure adequate licensed and non-licensed staff are schedule to meet patient care needs 

c) Oversees preparation of daily personnel assignments and delegates duties according to experience and skill level to provide quality patient care 

d) Assists in cross-training clinical staff to create a productive work environment for all clinical areas 

e) Evaluates the performance of all clinical personnel in his/her areas and assesses the quality of care and services for possible improvements 

f) Observes performance of all clinical staff members and provides feedback 

g) Ensures that staff implement established facility policies and procedures 

h) Analyzes clinical documentation to ensure facility’s policies/procedures are followed 

i) Serves as a liaison among patients, families, nursing, and medical staff to coordinate quality patient care 

j) Promotes harmonious relations and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team 

k) Remains current on all applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, professional standards and accreditation standards 

11. Materials management 

a) Applies material management principles to establish procedures for use 

b) Promotes cost-effectiveness and implements procedures to control waste 

c) Monitors the care and cleaning of equipment to maintain proper working condition 

d) Identifies and evaluates need for items relative to trends and physician requests 

e) Reviews inventory for availability of supplies and equipment necessary to meet patient needs 

f) Oversees inventory, maintaining adequate supplies and equipment and providing for their economical use


Qualifications 

1. Cooperative work attitude toward co-employees, management, patients, visitors, and physicians

2. Ability to promote favorable facility image with physicians, patients, insurance companies, and general public

3. Ability to make decisions and solve problems


Required

1. Bachelor’s Degree

2. RN with active license in appropriate state

3. CPR, ACLS and PALS Certification

4. Minimum of 3 years Healthcare supervisory experience

5. Evidence of leadership qualities

6. Strong ethical and moral character references

7. Language skills adequate for high-level written, interpersonal, and telephone communication in American English

Preferred

1. ASC experience

1. Ability to walk and standing 80% of work time.

4. Visual and auditory acuity for frequent use of computer and telephone and occasional use of other office equipment

5. Visual and auditory acuity for timely responsiveness to patient-care assessment activities

6. Ability to move quickly in response to patient needs

7. Ability to make frequent judgments and respond to routine problems

8. Ability to make occasional judgments and respond to disasters or emergencies, actual events, or drills
